There are hundreds of thousands of people on the Internet. We have a wonderful
community here, but it's still an open community. While we encourage everyone
to share as little or as much about themselves as they are comfortable with, we
sometimes need a reminder that there *are* unscrupulous people on the Internet.
Please do not, under *any* circumstances, give out your address,
passwords, or other personal information to anyone! We also recommend caution
in giving clues as to a localized geographic location, particularly to those
you don't
know well.
Soliciting personal information from other patrons either by
requesting their email address, phone number, or other personal information; or
encouraging them to contact you privately for off-site 'counseling,' further
(private) message board discussion, or discussion of a personal matter, is
frowned upon in Callahan's.
Please avoid giving out your full real name, especially in a
public setting like a conference room.
Do not give out
your address, or phone number. You might even want to be vague about your
location altogether.
Please do not give out your
email address as it could lead someone to your home address.
If you are asked for personal information in Callahans, you are under absolutely
no obligation to respond. Please do not respond to requests for such, and if
the request made you feel uncomfortable in any way, report it to a 'tender, or
to a staff member. We will do what we can to ensure it doesn't happen again.
We * never* take such reports lightly.
It's easy to form friendships online. Think twice before giving
out personal details, however, as you may later find that those personal
details are no longer private. It's a risk you take each and every time you
choose to reveal something to someone. Your confidence might be someone else's
gossip.
More importantly, if the person you decide to trust isn't trustworthy, you may
be placing yourself in very real personal jeopardy.
Something else to consider is keeping your friends safe. If you become close
friends with someone and learn personal details of that person's life, be
careful not to reveal those details to others. Please keep such information
in absolute confidence.
Please... be circumspect in all matters that relate to personal information about
yourself and others.
