Message Board Netiquette

The staff and tenders in Callahan's Saloon believe in the importance of free speech and the open interchange of ideas. We encourage posts and conversation on any issue or subject which may interest other patrons. We feel persons visiting our community are guests and we want them to feel at home in Callahans.

Our patrons understand the profound difference between respecting people and challenging issues or ideas. We treat each other with respect on our board and know you will post in the same spirit. While ideas can and should be challenged, people should and will be treated with respect.

We encourage both quiet and lively discussion on our message boards. Please feel free to respond to any post you read, or to start your own thread. On that note, try to stick to the topic of the thread. If you need to make a divergent point, consider starting a new thread to do so.

Listening to others is important. We learn most from those with whom we disagree.

Taunting a writer or otherwise attempting to (or appearing to) begin a flame war will probably lead to you receiving a message from staff. Avoid the hassle..:)

Posting in ALL CAPS is considered shouting, and correcting typos, especially when the meaning is clear, is really not necessary. We all understand typo..:)

It is frowned upon to add active sound files with your post. Please remember that your readers may be listening to their favorite band, artist or orchestra when your post comes up. You'll want to be more considerate than to interrupt their listening pleasure..:)

Large signature graphics (more than about 10 to 15 kb) should be displayed only once per thread. Message after message with the same large sig is considered rude.

{{ }}, (( )) and sometimes [[ ]] are often used to express hugs.. One should remember that not all patrons use graphics browsers or interfaces. For example, some browsers for the blind interpret these "hugs" as an audible "left parenthesis, left parenthesis, right parenthesis, right parenthesis, etc. If you "hug" with 30 sets of parenthesis, some patrons will be inconvenienced and may become irritated. Please be considerate..:)

Posting Guidelines

On rare occasions it may be necessary to move a post/thread, or to delete all or part of a post/thread. The ultimate decision in such a case is the staff's. A post may be moved, deleted or edited if any part of the post:

  • Violates the spirit of Why We Are Here.
  • Contains unduly harsh, foul or abusive language.
  • Solicits personal information from or about staff or patrons in any way.
  • Contains copyrighted material without permission to reprint - short attributed quotes and paraphrases are okay.
  • Advocates criminal or illegal acts in the USA.
  • Constitutes either untrue statements about, or expresses ridicule, scorn or a personal attack upon another person. Any person.
  • Contains racial or ethnic slurs, whether or not the specific reference is bigoted, hateful or mean spirited.
  • Contains a virus-laden attachment.
  • Contains X-rated or unduly vulgar content, including images. Such posts may be edited if the overall thrust of the post is not X-rated or vulgar. Poetry and other creative writing efforts will NOT be edited.
  • Contains threats of harm to oneself or others.
  • Contains commercial or personal advertising, promotional material or money making schemes not approved by staff in advance.
  • Is unduly long, repetitive - or contains a very large image file or sound files, or otherwise interferes with the normal reading of other posts.

Community Managers and certain Assistant Managers have the authority to move message threads, and to edit or delete posts, to place a person on read only status, and to remove a person from a community. We will not and do not take such actions lightly.

If you have any questions at all about posting in Callahans, please contact our Message Board Manager.
