Off the Wall at Callahan's

ISBN 0-312-85661-X

A Review by Kathy Casper

The magic of Callahan's Place is an experience that will change your life. Callahan's Place, the creation of author Spider Robinson, was a tavern in Suffolk County, New York. It was established by proprietor Mike Callahan, and frequented by the most incredible folk. If you're familiar with the series of stories by Spider Robinson, you will know of the fables and traditions established there.

But you may not know that the wall behind the bar at Callahan's Place was not graced with mirrors, as bars usually are. Instead, it was a blank wall, where - through the years, Mike wrote many of the most memorable toasts, one-liners, and puns that spiced the air of Callahan's.

Off The Wall At Callahan's is a compendium of these morsels of delight, and includes some of the songs the patrons enjoyed, as well. The author also includes a brief profile (his personal perception) of each character quoted in the book, and a foreword for devoted "Callahanians" and for the "uninitiated".

Off The Wall At Callahan's is an entertaining read for anyone who enjoys quips and humor (would that be "quiptic" humor?), and it serves as a great introduction to the Callahan's series of books by Spider Robinson.
