Opening Toast

May you have warm words
on a cold evening,
A full moon on a dark night,
And the road downhill
all the way to your door

-- An Irish Toast - Author Unknown

Manager's Corner

Be sure to join us on Tuesday, March 17 (starting at 9:00 p.m. eastern) for our annual Saint Patrick's Day party. This will be a great opportunity for our new patrons to meet some of the veterans around here, and vice versa. And for those of you who have been away to return for the night... I look forward to seeing many friends at this traditional event!

We're happy to report that our March Website updates are up and both very happy and very Irish! Do check out our top page and let us know what you think.

For those of you without Java capable browsers, Delphi is currently testing an HTML Chat option. You will need "Frames" capability but many of you without Java capable browsers will soon be able to join us in chat.

Because of a change in Shady's work schedule, Shady and Mitzi have swapped their responsibilities in Callahan's. Details below...

Last issue I said, "Doris, BECKETT, explained one night that 'naked means you're wearing no clothes, and nekkid means you're up to something.'" What we could not determine from Doris is *where* or *how* she obtained this knowledge. Magpie has written to tell us that it was in one of the routines of "the late great Lewis Grizzard."

And finally, we have developed a Welcome page for new visitors to Callahan's Saloon. It offers them insights into our customs and traditions, and details on how to find us, how to chat, post, commonly used expressions and the like.

Conference News

Mitzi (Mitziproctor) has been named Conference Manager and will be coordinating our special chats, scheduled chats and overseeing all other aspects of conferencing in Callahan's. Please wish her well when you see her.

Bruce (bruce64) and Star decorated the place for our Valentine's Night party on February 14th. Unfortunately, many of our patrons found it necessary to spend time alone with their loved ones that night, so.....

We left the decorations up and had an impromptu party the next night...:)

Message Board News

Shady (SHADYJAY) has become our new Message Board Manager. She will be making sure we all stay on topic and otherwise behave ourselves... Please wish her well on her new responsibilities when you see her.

We had over 700 posts to our Forum Board this month! And we welcomed 14 new posters. Some we knew previously from conferences. They were; John (jworth2), asdic386, Cloud9 (nfm), Capnsquirt, arthurm, Roxy (roxannexoe), klinger, Star (starcreek), Bruce (bruce64), MaryEdna (artwork), hauka, beermeister, Sally (sallyjb),and blacktop1. We welcomed back Stu (thestubum) and Kyle (kylere.)

Our budding poets were Cortland (KA5S) with The Garment of Delight, Eternally Yours (a vignette), Jason Becker with Emotions and My Love and Kyle with Forgotten Member. All well written and enjoyable to read.

Humor took on all forms with submissions by JeanneK about Bathing a Cat, and Ken with his Redneck Love Poem. Ginger contributed a humorous story about Adam and Eve, Oky told us about a funny greeting card and asked, "Are you a Problem Thinker." Doc provided the top 5 reasons John Glenn is too old to be sent to Space. Sally shared a Divine Press Release and Mitzi offered Ten ways to know if your wife has PMS, What your car says about you, Where Drivers are From and New Ferraries. Dennis' (GRIBBIN) joke is featured in this Bar Rag.

Our Political Activities topic started off with a continuing discussion of President Clinton and his political problems. Dee (Booksfan) suggested that we concentrate on the things that really matter to this country. Most agreed with her though some worried that the President has lost the moral authority to lead the country.

We had quite a discussion on Self Esteem; do women have more or less than men, is there a glass ceiling, can women become CEO's? Peter pondered who enjoys sex more, men or women and Dan is being invited to a lot of parties lately after his boasts of sexual prowess.

We learned that Sally is into astrology and Janice and Ken's wife Angelina are into Tarot Cards. Under the category of Shared Pain, Sally reported that she hit her head and sustained a concussion. Janice reported on a friend who just got out of an abusive relationship. Lou asked for help with a sleep problem. We offered advise and wished them all well.

In the Sharing Joy category, Maggie shared with us the first smile of her 2 month old son Nicholas.

We learned that Lou, or is that Sasquatch, has big feet and Oky and Mitzi have wide feet. Kathy shared famous quotes and in another post mentioned that it was President Reagan's Birthday. This bought up a discussion of our views on Reagan as a President. She also contributed a thought provoking story called Achieving Glory.

Birthdays This Month

Birthday Greetings were heartily extended to:

Jimbeaux   JIM047   February 6
Cloud9   NFM   February 6
Chris   LARDARON   February 28

Joke of The Month

One day, they're leading a priest, a drunkard and an engineer to the guillotine. They ask the priest if he wants to face up or down when he meets his fate. The priest says he would like to face up so he will be looking towards heaven when he dies. They raise the blade of the guillotine and release it; it comes speeding down and suddenly stops just inches from his neck. The authorities take this as divine intervention and release the priest.

The drunkard comes to the guillotine next. He also decides to die face up, hoping that he will be as fortunate as the priest. They raise the blade of the guillotine and release it. It comes speeding down and suddenly stops just inches from his neck. Again, the authorities take this as a sign of divine intervention, and they release the drunkard as well.

Next is the engineer. He, too, decides to die facing up. As they slowly raise the blade of the guillotine, the engineer suddenly says, "Hey, I see what your problem is ..."

Poem of the Month

One Day Irish

Beat the drum, the whistle blow;
The music calls and we will go,
The soul of Ireland to seek,
For on this day, and in this week,
Let every land and every heart
With Celtic spirit play a part.

Now sing of colleens fair and sweet,
Sing of hills all green and neat,
Mountains vanished in the cloud,
Fairy people rare and proud.
Sing of bold, defiant folk,
Still unconquered, never broke;
Selkie lovers from the sea,
Soldiers, marching, banners free.

Sing of all the ages past
And when the day is done, at last,
Pray for blessing, that there be
Peace in Ireland, endlessly.

-- Cortland E. Richmond

Pun of the Month

Researchers say cheerful people resist disease better that the sullen ones.

In other words, the surly bird catches the germ.

Closing Toast

"When you share pain, there's less of it. When you share joy, there's more of it. That's a basic fact of the universe..."

-- Jake Stonebender in "Fivesight"
