Opening Toast

The worst misunderstandings are the unspoken ones.
-- Slippery Joe Maser

Manager's Corner

Hi everybody... December was another great month for Callahan's. Our message board and conferencing were both up again due to the many new patrons coming through and the wonderful poetry being posted.

Our January Web page is about to go live. We debut our new Bookstore link on it. You can now order your favorite (in print) Spider Robinson book, or a book we've mentioned or discussed. For example, Shady added " Tuesdays With Morrie" to the list. If you have a favorite book you'd like the rest of us to take a look at, just tell us about it on the message board.

Also, Roxy has been missing in action for awhile now. A visit to her Web site revealed that she and Bear have been delayed in their move to New Mexico, and won't be traveling until later this month.. We've featured Roxy's last Rambling to us as a way of saying we miss her ramblings..

Saint Valentine's Day is almost upon us. If you have a love poem or two, we'd love to hear them...

Conference News

Although all of our conferences have been busy of late, several deserve mentioning. On December 5th, Lou led a lively discussion on the book, "Callahan's Crosstime Saloon" by Spider Robinson. On January 2nd, we will discuss "Time Travelers, Strictly Cash." and on January 30th, "Callahan's Secret."

We celebrated Mike's (miirish) birthday this month. His sisters Patti and 'Lilsis,' set up a nice party. They sent out invitations and welcomed all with a trivia game and many laughs.

Doc started his Jokes and Riddles Night (held on alternate Thursday nights.) The first was a rousing success.

We had a special Poetry Night where we discussed poems by Edna St. Vincent Millay.

Our Christmas Party was well attended. We decorated our Christmas Tree with a few body parts..:)

And our New Year's Party Across the Time Zones was great um. We had a good crowd, 15 people in the room at one point. A few limericks by Doc, a few resolutions shared and lots of toasts..! Thanks to all who participated..

Message Board News

This month we welcomed Mike (malakai), Joliee and Jhrdwyn(drygnheart). We even had a visit from The Big Guy (santa), wishing us a happy holiday. We also welcomed back Josh (marquis66).

Politically, the discussion of AIDS continued for the third month. We pondered whether AIDS is related to race and again if it is an epidemic and added a thread on statistics.

We had a brief discussion on the Brady Law and continued our discussion on Mainstreaming brought up by Karen (tainted.)

Most of our humor this month was related to the season. Doc (metcalfr) offered two pieces, as did Mitzi and Ginger (mmermelstein.) Jhrdwyn, Oky (okyoky) and Dennis (gribbin) also contributed.

Lou (rose8364) made a request for Christmas Cards because of a contest he is in with his neighbor. Wonder who won? [She creamed me. 97 to 65 Lou]

He also shared Murphys Law with us. Mike (malakai) brought up the topic of being cautious in entering a relationship and some interesting discussion followed. Mitzi offered holiday thoughts about a veteran who is alone for the holidays.

Dan (Danculberson) announced that we could see him on a Bouldercam in Boulder, CO. Some of us actually spotted him.

Jeanne (jeannek) once again offered us many of her poems including one about Christmas Morning which really got us in the Holiday mood. Cameron (hhmcameron) offered quite a few pieces also. We also enjoyed poetry from Jhrdwyn, Kass and Joliee.

Kathy (kathyc) shared a poem written about her father who was a WWII Veteran, Peter shared a short poem and Karen (tainted) also shared several of her original pieces.

As the professional football season draws to a close, Shady (shadyjay), Joce (jocelyn), Mitzi, Lou and Dennis shared their views and rooted for their favorite teams.

Lou shared a piece on measurements that came from the art of drinking. The rule of thumb caught the attention of several folks.

Lou announced that there are two new book reviews on our web page. Mitzi submitted a review of "Callahan's Secret" and Lou offered a review on "Callahan's Crosstime Saloon." Visit and enjoy all of our many reviews on our Reviews web page.

Kak (alkak000) posted a Challenge that was a repost of several years ago. The challenge was to make a wish and consider the consequences. Ken (crscomp) took up the challenge and wished for unconditional love. This wish brought up a subject that was covered in Callahans last year at this time. What is unconditional love and is it possible?

We all wished Cherrie well on her gallbladder surgery. All turned out well though since she was able to share her gallbladder as a decoration to our Christmas Tree :)

ASCII art followed many wishes for the Holiday Season. All wishes were appreciated and passed around.

Callahan's Bio of the Month

Jim & Paul MacDonald - Telepathic half-brothers with a fused identity. They sacrificed themselves to save the world from a cockroach. Which story was that in..?

Pun of the Month

A Buddhist hamburger joint: They'll make you one with everything.

Closing Toast

"In some ways, it's nice that memory is so plastic and transient. You play differently when you know there's tape rolling.
-- Jake Stonebender
