"Sometimes, just naming your burden helps" Hi everyone, September was an interesting month in Callahans - highlighted with the Spider Night conference, three new book reviews added to our Web site and Spider's extraordinary plea from help from his readers also being made known. In addition, Delphi started full scale beta testing of its new auditorium chat system. After a rocky start, the system is becoming fairly stable and many of our patrons have written to say they like it. Look for continued testing - and if you want to help, join us for our two Callahans Auditorium chats every Monday night at 10 Eastern and Saturday night at 9:00 Eastern. The poetry contest is over and the winners announced. We were very pleased with the number and quality of entries. See our Web page to read the winning entries and find out who wrote them.. Lou Spider Robinson Night was held on September 15, 1997 and was very well attended. We learned an awful lot about Spider and his books. Curt, who has written and published several SF stories, co hosted with Lou. He stunned the crowd by suggesting the Callahans series might not be Spider's finest work...:) We found out that Deanna has every Spider work except "Copyright Violation." If anyone reading this can help her with that last acquisition, please email Lou. Lou thought the conference started to degenerate when okra and hog jowls were distributed to all the participants but it was Bo, and his description of what his "puppy" does with 25 pounds of dog food that ended the night for Lou...:) The conference continued into the wee hours... We were treated to lots of poetry this month in part because of the poetry contest here in Callahans. Some of the submissions were posted for our enjoyment. Jeanne (jeannek) wrote on the death of Diana and Kathy (kathyc) wrote about the death of Mother Theresa. We welcomed Todd (terr), Cameron (hhmcameron), Ginger (mmermelstein), Doc (metcalfr) and Dan danculberson) as budding poets. The earlier part of the month bought lengthy discussions on the death of Princess Diana. We questioned who was to blame or if we need to blame someone. We spoke about the HIV virus. What is it and is there a cure? We had a short discussion on taxes and if the rich pay more. We were treated to humor by Lou (rose8364), Doc (metcalfr) and Ginger (mmermelstein). We learned that one isn't allowed to fish in their PJ's in Chicago which lead us to ponder who has fish in their pj's or an elephant for that matter? :) There was lots of talk of Spider Robinson this month since this was Spider Robinson month here at Cals. Mitzi reported that "Callahan's Legacy" is now out in paperback and in the bookstores. Lou pointed out that there are several new book reviews on the Callahan's web page. Lou shared that there is a letter from Spider himself on the net. It was sent to folks at alt.callahans and addressed to all who are involved with Callahan's in cyberspace. The idea of continuing to create a cookbook was brought up again. Lou offered a questionnaire to see how much interest there is in the project of creating a cookbook and selling it with profit for charity. There doesn't seem to be much interest at this time. We were treated to another one of Roxy's Ramblings where she shares her experiences leading to a move to New Mexico. Lou announced the new Delphi Forum Page for web access and some offered opinions that they didn't like it. The new Auditorium Chat for Relationships Forum was announced. He also announced that Tracy (Dove1) and Terry (TERRYTEE2000) have a new business web page. Visit this page and see some great graphics and creativity! We also learned that Dan (danculberson) is from Neptune and leaves footprints in Jell-0 and that Lou is cute when he is confused. New 'Tender On behalf of everyone at Callahan's, I'd like to welcome Japers as our newest tender. I'm sure everyone will welcome him and look forward to his conferences. Welcome aboard Japers. Callahan's Bio of the Month Anonymous -- A Callahan's regular so self-effacing that no one can recall much about him. Not even how he got that name, which I'm sure we must have asked.
He acquitted himself well at the trial... Writing is a simple trick; all you have to do is sit and stare at a blank piece of paper until beads of blood form on your forehead. -- Larry Van Cott Hello.
