Opening Toast

"The only kind of payment that always guarantees a handsome return is paying attention."
-- Lady Sally

Manager's Corner

Hi..! As noted in the last Bar Rag, I am the new manager of Callahans Saloon on Delphi Internet. With your help, I hope to continue the traditions of Callahans as established by past managers, staff and patrons.

Please feel free to email me if you have any suggestions for improving the place.

Our Poetry Contest continues. We haven't received a limerick yet so that prize is really up for grabs. If Callahans has ever touched you like it has me, you might try expressing it in a poem.

Our September Web pages are up and feature Spider Robinson. There are 5 book reviews of Spider's works and an intro to our Spider Bytes section. If you can add to the section, we'd love to hear from you.

If you haven't been by for awhile, we have free Web access and scheduled conferences every night - so why not stop by for a few...? and while you're here, read and post on the message board. The URL for our Web site is: http://www0.delphiforums.com/callahan/

Hope to see you soon,

Lou

Conference News

David (DCMISNER) returned after a long absence from conference and then promptly left for a few minutes to check on 'the kids on the stove.' No one dared ask him what he meant by that when he returned...
Welcome back, David

We believe that NANC has thrown her hat into the ring for the Presidency in the year 2000. At least the beginnings of a grass roots campaign has begun.. She's looking for a running mate...

Toasting began to make a comeback this month. In one conference, there were four toasts made in a row. More on toasting in next month's edition.

Message Board News

In the month of August, Callahans was pleased to see the return of Joey (JOSEPHRY) and Pilgrim (PILGRIMBOB) and we welcomed Dan (DANCULBERSON), Ginger (MMERMELESTEIN), Lady (LADYCHERON), Dave (DAVEARONSON), Tatha (TATHASWANN) and Pauliewog (SOAPNUT.)

We learned that Lou, Dan and Nick all read Victoria Secret (if "read" is the right word) and that Mitzi does visit the Gent's rooms occasionally (Tracy's number is still there, BTW.)

We also learned that Doc (METCALFR) had successful surgery this month and is recovering nicely. Get well soon Doc.

Joey shared an article that he wrote to his newspaper regarding government censorship. He suggested that *parents* must be responsible for the safety of their children. Dave supported this position. Lou also supported his opinion and wondered about the Great Society and whether or not it resulted in some positive aspects to our culture.

Bratchild shared his travel to the Far East and his college plans with us.

Lou wondered how he could get a free meal out of Al (NURFBALL) like Mitzi did on her recent trip to California.

Roxy shared one of her Ramblings where she struggled with the issue of what to do for a homeless person who was living in a car. It was very thought provoking. Next month, our Web site will feature Roxy and her Ramblings!

Tabitha (TATHASWANN) and Dave (DAVEARONSON) posted poetry and Jeanne (JEANNEK) steamed up the windows with her poetry this month.

Kak gave us a book report on The Dilbert Principle. This was an interesting report coming from a CEO who admits to having CEO Hair! His report left Shady befuddled (so what's new?)

Jeanne shared a well written report of a day in her life with her cats. We learned a lot about our feline friends.

Lou announced that Spider Robinson will be coming out with new books in October. "Callahan Chronicles" will include "Callahan's Cross Time Saloon," "Time Travelers, Strictly Cash" and "Callahan's Secret." This is important news to fans of science fiction (and Callahans) because these books have been out of print and hard to find for quite some time.

"Stardancer" which includes "Stardancer" and "Starseed" is also being published. And finally, " Callahan's Legacy" will be out in paperback in October.

Biography of the Month

-- Mitzi (MITZIPROCTOR) --

Without ever having read a Spider Robinson novel, I stumbled into Callahans Saloon for a drink one night in September 1996. I was immediately roasted and felt welcomed. I had 'found me a home' to quote Jimmy Buffett.

I became interested in the philosophy of Callahans and decided to read some of Robinson's books. I embraced the philosophy of Shared Joy/Shared Pain that Robinson and this Delphi forum promoted.

I wanted to be a part of the legacy of Callahans on Delphi. It is for this reason that I have taken on the challenge of being Message Board Manager.

Please help us, as we endeavor to make Callahans thrive, by posting on the forum and dropping in for a drink some evenings. We'd love to meet you.

Pun of the Month

One day a planet is discovered out Antares way whose sole inhabitant is an enormous humanoid, three miles high and made of granite. At first it is mistaken for an immense statue left by some vanished race of giants, for it squats motionless on a yellow plain, exhibiting no outward sign of life.

It has legs, but it never rises to walk on them. It has a mouth, but never eats or speaks. It has what appears to be a perfectly functional brain, the size of a condominium, but the organ lies dormant, electrochemical activity at a standstill. Yet it lives.

This puzzles the hell out of the scientists, who try everything they can think of to get some sign of life from the behemoth - in vain. It just squats motionless and seemingly thoughtless until one day a xenobiologist, frustrated beyond endurance, screams, "How could evolution give legs, mouth, and brain to a creature that doesn't use them?"

It happens that he is the first one to ask a direct question in the thing's presence. It rises with a thunderous rumble to it's full height, scattering the clouds, thinks for a second, booms "IT COULDN'T," and squats down again.

"Migod," exclaims the xenobiologist, "of course! It only stands to reason!"
--- Long-Drink McGonnigle

A Closing Toast

"We raise hopes here...until they are old enough to fend for themselves."
--- Mike Callahan
