A Valentines Poem - The Shirt

I had to wash it
It smelled like you
and for the longest time
all I did was take it out now and then,
and hold it against my face.

But I knew you had worn it
and the longing to have
what covered your bare skin, cover mine...
was too great.

I wore it briefly
then put it away
then wore it again
and again
and...well,
I had to wash it,
it felt like a funeral

Tracy (DOVE) -- all rights reserved.

Catch this and other fine poetry on Thursday evenings when Peter (PHDESMOND) hosts Poetry Night.

Forum Notes

The Birth Control thread generated some lively interchange among about a half dozen participants. It's a touchy topic, particularly as the thread kind of unraveled into perhaps 47 directions. I am sure I smelled smoke... maybe saw some embers ... even flames.

The Phonics thread started innocently enough with a (I think) tongue-in-cheek comment on teaching cyber talk in school - a spoof of Ebonics. This led to a discussion as to whether this and other viable American dialects should be taught in school. One new member to declare that those who didn't think Ebonics should be taught were racists! Whew!

Mitzi (MITZIPROCTOR) advised Angel that her niece (Mitzi's -- I never know how to structure these sentences) would be working for the Tampa Bay Lightning in a non-player capacity. Part time initially but with goals of a full time career.

Plain physics probably dictate that the professional leagues will likely be male dominated ... 225 pounds hitting 135 pounds just doesn't work ... but one shouldn't forget that Marion Rheume did break the barrier with the Lightning, as a goalie. Maybe that was a publicity stunt, as some proclaimed. She did start a couple of games. No small feat for anyone.

The Women's World Hockey Championships were played this month too. Except for a preponderance of tresses flowing from beneath helmets you would be hard pressed to tell the difference between their play and many male teams.

Hassan X's(LUDIKID) Quote of the Day is also a very popular new thread. People actually complained to Management when he missed a few days. It's a fascinating feature that perhaps provide some slight insight into Hassan himself --- an interesting study of its own.

Arising from one of Hassan's posts was an interchange of ideas about the role of religion in our lives, strengths and failures of it, the role of Christ in developing Christianity, the role Paul played in shaping the religion, and various other themes. Many of our patrons contributed people. Holy cow, man ! It seems that religion can indeed provoke a great deal of interested discussion.

Tina(CALLAHANS) poised a query about what foods might lead to a faster metabolism -- thus freeing us old guys -- and Tina -- from excess bits and pieces. Other than the extreme bits that Shady and Dennis (GRIBBIN) might take, it appears there are few real options than less food and more exercise. Geez though, I was sure a cold martini melted the love handles. Sorry Tina but I think it is all work and no play ... well ... there could be boisterous play ... ;) Careful on using treadmills though. And watch out for the plants and cloths that occupy most people's exercise machine. Did you know a Nordic Track's handlebars are just the right height to hang a suit jacket and trousers ? The top brake is perfect for Spider Plants.

Conference Highlights

On February 2, Delphinian hosted a block party for all the Delphi groups. Wasn't this one night after Angel got smashed in conference on Bailey's? Risky Business Catering ran their feet off (mostly Tracy and Angel) serving food and drinks. It was a great opportunity to drop into some of the other SIGs to see what they were all about ... and to make some new friends. But we did retreat back to Callahan's afterwards... there is just no place as good as home.

The Callahan's community is very ethnically mixed; white men are in the very small minority. The people here come from every single race, ethnic background, and most of the religions. What a change from our roots (Callahan's Cross-Time Saloon by Spider Robinson. circa 1973.) The original Callahan's was a man's place to drink. Very little ethnic mix. And only one woman. The mosaic that makes up Callahan's is indeed unique... extremely rich... and very precious. Join us. We hold no prejudice. We pick on everybody.

Lori (LORI10405) and Tracy have undertaken to build themselves a man (although they seem to be excluding any thoughts of football and beer from the brain -- causing substantial philosophical debate as to whether this in fact would qualify as a "man".)

Magpie (MAGPIE) actually 'fessed up that after a hard day at work he fell fast asleep on the treadmill at the gym. Now picture that. Zzzzz... smack ... splat. Nobody but Magpie can do that, right? Well, doesn't Shady tell us about the time that Tracy kind of lost her attention ... had one foot on the treadmill, the other off... and had a telephone in hand ... It was ugly. Shady went in to fix a split gut after that.

Doc(METCALFR) hosted his second very successful science Q&A conference on February 9. Discussion ranged from the uses and effects of melatonin, to basic quantum physics, the preponderance of elements in the universe and on the Earth, to reincarnation. Cham (KATKIN) was simply amazing with the way she listed the elemental makeup of the earth's crust... off the top of her head I am sure... to several decimal places. Several important facts emerged.

Ryan (RSUENAGA) figured he would come back as a pinata. That broke everybody up. Joce (JOCELYNF) wants to come back as a dolphin. Angel wants to come back as the tight lycra pants on a Dolphin's tight end (and Doc wondered why anyone would want to spend the day wrapped around a sweaty butt.)

Thanks Doc for an informative and fun conference ! And speaking of science, of sorts ....

Callahan's Valentine's Dating Game, held February 14, was further proof that the Chaos Theory of Physics exists. At one point there were more hecklers than bachelors and bachelorettes, and a certain unidentified male contestant was left in the isolation booth overnight, with only an old copy of the Plains Reader and a mustard-stained Hustler magazine.

He has graciously promised not to press charges if we pay for his dry cleaning and chiropractic bills and, of course, not mention his name.

The festivities went on until the wee hours of the morning, and everyone agreed that hecklers *do* have more fun than game contestants. The only question left is who locked Tracy into the freezer ...

Thanks Angel !

Note -- Cherrie(WUMING) later blabbed that it was Hassan(LUDIKID) who spent the weekend in the isolation booth.

Chris (JAZANME) filled us in on a few of the pick-up lines the Australian lads have used on her. For example;

"This guy came up to me and said he had been watching my bum all night and wanted to know if the face matched."

What about; "I can't remember my phone number can I have yours."

Or the time she was told "I had come to bed eyes but a go to hell mouth."

Charming, those fellows, but there may be more than meets the ear...

Tracy reports:

"Many moons ago I had the 'tedious job' of taking a visiting Australian rugby team out on the town in Los Angeles. (Oh, poor me! he he.) I must say....um....hubba hubba!! I'll agree that they grow them rather handsome down under. And that accent! *Swoon*. Oh dear, I can hear the beginning rumblings of the rumors about me and the Australian rugby team now....."

Callahan's People

Dennis(GRIBBIN) is back into the race to place for the new Callahan's extreme medical adventure crown. Dennis went into surgery on February 21. The surgeon apparently learned from Shady so things are OK. He was up and walking about a bit on February 24. Thanks Debbie(BATMOM) and Shady for the updates. Welcome back Dennis !

John(MEGABITE) had his 41st birthday this month. So he looks 21. So I lied. Happy Birthday John. Hurry back, John, so we can buy you a drink.

Chris(JAZANME) has joined us from Australia! Now that could well be the distance record for the "Newbie of the Month." Welcome! Come often, and stay long !

Janice(DAWNSLITE) says that she isn't interesting enough to be written about. She also says she doesn't do tricks ... except ... (nevermind.) Janice has been nominated for the "Perpetual Newbie" title.

Closing Thought

"The Net and Web symbols and icons, the mythological names, the weird links and mirrors, the uncensored slop, the stench of digital sulfur, the secrecy, the fuss about encryption, the inside language, the personal signatures, the home pages and so on, are the stuff of alchemy. The world governments' efforts to control this secretive language is no different than the Church trying to censor medieval alchemists or religious mystics."

-- Chuck McCallagh in his essay "The Alchemical Net."
