Callahan's December 1996 Bar Rag!

Opening Remembrance

"In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.
We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.
Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields."

John McCrae -- May 3, 1915 Lt.Col. John McCrea died before the end of the first world war from complications exacerbated by poison gas. He rests in Wimereax cemetery.

To all the men and women who have placed themselves in harms way so that we may live freely, we are forever in your debt ! *****SMASH*****

The Callahan's Success Story

Since its inception in July 0f 1993 [through March of 1998], Callahan's Saloon has seen over 18,500 Delphi members stream through its oaken cyber-door. We have posted over 22,000 messages, some funny, some very serious, and some just plain nonsense, in our forum.

We have been led by a staff of tenders that have included engineers, nurses, social workers, computer professionals, students, published writers, other artists, and the general folks who don't fit in any of these categories.

We have hosted conferences of more than 60 people in one night, and have had three international reunions in various countries. We've even had a wedding where the Bride, her Maid of Honor, and her Attendant had only met here, before meeting in person just before the wedding...

Now that is a 'net presence I challenge anyone to beat. If you haven't been to Callahan's on Delphi, why not ?

Spider Robinson ... here's to you for the initial creation... To Nick (NGREENE) for the cyber creation ... And to everyone else who has helped carry on the tradition. ******SMASH*****

Callahan's People

DENNIS (GRIBBIN) -- is a dweeb! Apparently in his house that's a good thing -- almost like a God! Only in Texas..:) And those beautiful brown eyes and sexy long eye lashes! Check his GIF in the library! Dark hair, a beard that comes and goes! And he has a proverbial heart of gold!

He's a computer Geek who loves to play golf. And there's never any doubt where you stand with him!

It is reported that Dennis puts the seat down, doesn't squeeze the toothpaste in the middle and remembers to send flowers on his anniversary (one rose for every year!).

Dennis you are a terrific addition to Callahan's! Heal well and quickly. See you on the links.

Deb (BATMOM) -- Deb used to be very wary of the hours her old man Dennis (GRIBBIN) spent sippin' Sam Adams at Callahan's wondering "What kind of people does he find online ?" You know what the press says (they have never reported on Callahan's ... she had only read about the kids, the weirdos, the sex maniacs, the perverts, the lonely hearts, the introverts.

So she slyly peered over the old man's shoulder. Her eyes even flashed slightly emerald when Fred_Astaire waltzed the night away with Gypsy at the Halloween party. Well to keep things in line doesn't she end up with her own account? Shy when she joined us, she quickly felt the warmth and love from all who kept asking "Is this Dennis' Deb ?" (what with her having kept Callahan's informed of his surgical status.) She has become enamored with the place. Especially those laughter filled Callahan's Lunches with Shady (SHADYJAY) and the occasional appearance of Popeye. Her charm and quick wit brighten the place when she enters the room. Shady and Deb have become fast friends as they team up to keep Dennis (GRIBBIN) on the straight and narrow. Welcome to Callahan's DEB! Newbie of the month! We are charmed to know you. Come often and stay long!

On Adulation

A gal who gives good adulation
Can hold any chair in the nation -
'Tho most guys, it is said,
Think that, "good" is for bed,
It's their EGOS that need titillation !

Punday Nights

Puns, of course, are a staple in the Callahan's diet. Fundamental to the basic philosophy. Ivana (IVANAC) -- the Queen of puns -- hosts Punday Nights. See our Announcements for the coming theme. All are welcome !

Conference Highlights

On Thursday November 14, Callahan's hosted a conference with the title "When Men and Women Talk." Approximately 25 folks attended although not at one time. It's not clear that the men there understood the topic the same way the women did. Mitzi (MITZIPROCTOR) moderated. At first, the crowd discussed subjects such as body language, what does it mean, that kind of thing. Some felt that we make too much of body language. Mitzi disagreed. This led to a discussion of online friendships and relationships.

About this time a group from The Singles Community showed up (come again ... we don't bite ... much) and added to the discussion. Terry (DOVE8) felt that sometimes it is better to keep friendships online and not get to know folks personally. Here again there wasn't full agreement and we shared our experiences meeting people in person that we knew online. The conference lasted almost two hours when Mitzi declared that she needed a drink! The positive responses to the conference led us to believe that we should do it again soon.

Risky Business Catering Begins

Let Callahan's Risky Business Cyber Catering Service cater all your party needs. Our experienced staff of bartenders will attend your conference party, providing all the beverages and food for your guests. We have bartenders with many talents, from MUD's to music trivia, puns and cooking skills. Check with your forum manager, and have them post a message in our forum under the subject Cyber catering Request. We will do the rest! Indicate time (Eastern), date, size of party, forum topic, formal or informal, and directions. Also if anyone has any food (or other) allergies.

Not that we would do anything about it. We are just nosey. :) When our truck arrives we will honk 3 times. We have already catered 4 parties and the worst error was briefly running out of rum. Intrepid 'tender Trace called for help and Angel arrived with the tanker truck for drinks noniterruptus. Hey it's great!

Come on over to Callahan's' or invite us to your place! We've served everything from Champagne, Amores, Godiva Chocolates, Dewberries for the pixies, different types of Mead ... and we'll even role play (to a degree) as required. ;)

A Thanksgiving Poem

The gods turned their backs and the children died
In the streets among bullets, under bombs from the sky
Beside furnaces burning as parents stood by
And the gods laughed like gods at the children's small cry.
In darkness they died, alone in a cell
In a home that is fed from a poisonous well
Destroyed, discarded, forgotten.
No soul left to tell
of the pain to these glorious gods in their hell.
Yet, the children walked on. The children grew tall.
But no shadow they cast in your street or your hall
You don't see them, don't hear them or notice their call.
Condemned by the gods no one eases their fall.
But then they meet - one by one - and each other they hold
by the hand, in the heart, with a smile from the soul.
And behold !
Laughter rings forth. Life overflows.
Risen from death like the Phoenix of old
they are the most beautiful sight to behold.
And they called all the children of the night and the cold.
"Here is strength, here is life, here is hope for the taking. Be bold !"

A Closing Quote

"If women didn't exist, all the money in the world would have no meaning."
-- Aristotle Onassis.

Reporter's Note
A special thanks to DR2B, a part of whose letter has been shared in within.

The characters "Zoey, Solace, Jake, Mike Callahan, Father Newman, Arethusa and Lady Sally" are all the creations of Spider Robinson, and variously appear in his books "Lady Slings the Booze", "The Callahan Touch", and "Callahan's Legacy", all of which you should know because these are required reading for anyone with even a remote life. Callahan's Place, Mary's Place and Lady Sally's House are also Spider Robinson's creations.
