But ****SMASH**** Conference Highlights The original Callahan's had a thick oaken door, adorned with a crack down the middle -- a silent tribute to the day that a rude and disrespectful "guest" was physically thrown from the bar by Fast Eddie. In that case the door didn't get opened in time. Callahan's is based on respect and a high degree of decorum. A couple of nights ago a patron started to rudely harass our guests. He was immediately shown the (oaken) door! We welcome everyone but please be respectful of our staff and guests. We do pride ourselves at being the safest place on the 'net, and guard that reputation. On September 9 we welcomed back several veterans who haven't been in conference in ages. Welcome back Andi(HANELT) and Corey(COREY42). And on that same evening our almost-entirely forum person Joey(JOSEPHFRY) also came in! It's great to see more folks in conference. On September 19 Callahan's hosted a conference on the topic of Cyber Sex. Debate was lively as many participants expressed a wide variety of views. The debate has continued in the forum at some length and likely will for some time more. There seemed to be a pronounced split among people who believe that c-sex is cheating on your significant other, and those who take it as something not that different than xgifs. It would seem at first pass that the split ran generally among the female/male lines --- although not totally. This was probably one of the most well attended conferences in recent memory --- I counted over 25 participants, on and off, including a batch of new folks. What a way to spend 2 hours! Ummm... On September 22, the Anniversary of the First Gathering of the Clan in Alexandria VA, Joce (JF) led us through a hectic evening of Macarena lessons. Was the top of that bar ever crowded -- what with proper Macarena etiquette dictating that it be danced on top of the bar. Angel passed out pink feather boas to the guys. That works, I guess. One fine evening the following discussion took place:
... In an unrelated story, a small memorial service was subsequently held for Al (or the bits of him that could be found.) Authorities suspect that for unknown reasons he fell victim to an avian of almost supernatural fury. Who says a Dove is a symbol of peace, anyway? Forum Notes In post 15632 Bets (BEYOTI) shared with us a very troubling story about an individual she met here at Callahan's, and the damage that resulted in her life by being taken by him. Some interesting discussion of the pros and cons of sharing too much on-line ensued. We tend to explore the question of on-line relationships quite intensely. It's a topic worth thinking about. In post 15646, and related to Bets' post, Angel (TERRIBAILEY) observed that Callahan's tends not to attract too much riff-raff, and that it is of much higher quality than anything out on IRC. She wondered why. There are only two concrete conclusions that can be drawn here. First, Callahan's is indeed of superior quality to other 'net sites. No question. If you have not joined us yet, try it out. Second, the spirit of Mike Callahan lives! Come to think of it, that's the same as the first conclusion. Plus there is that oaken door. In post 15652 Ivana (IVANAC) wondered why it was that poetry (and perhaps the arts in general) is deemed a "female" topic, particularly since so much poetry dwells on violence and sex (and gardens.) Many of the old masters were, of course, male. No conclusions were reached on this one yet. If you have any ideas ... In post 15678 Joey(JOSEPHFRY) raised the question that while rape is a heinous crime that should be dealt with harshly, no matter how the rape is perpetrated, was it possible that the roots of date rape were different than that which has been historically considered rape. If they were different, could steps be taken to minimize the probabilities of date rape. This question has not been resolved. The debate continues. Closing Thought The Breckenridge Brewery of Dallas advertises with a billboard that says "Beer so good you won't even want to pee." Seriously! Go look! It's right there beside the brewery!
