A Toast " I don't know if I've ever made a toast before, but this wonderful lady is my very best friend in the world... I'm so honored and humbled that she has chosen to befriend me but... ahem ... I uh can't help comparing her to one of my all-time favorite screen stars... I do believe Angel's been in more laps than a napkin and I know when she's bad she's very very good and I know she doesn't consider the men in her life.... but the life in her men and most of all.....she's never too old to become younger. " *****SMASH***** Shady (SHADYJAY) -- August 22, 1996 on Angel Appreciation Evening -- with some poetic license from Mae West On Love And Friendship The issue that by far dominated Callahan's this month was Angel's (TERRIBAILEY) and Shady's (SHADYJAY) health. Shady is having herself rebuilt from various used parts from various scrap-yards. On August 5 she checked into the hospital for operation number 2 or 37 ... hard to keep track. It was a great deal rougher than anticipated -- to the extent that the first night a crash cart was parked outside her door. :( Her bustle seems to be back though, although Al (KINETIC) wondered why she now had two left feet. One of the risks of used parts..? The recovery method Shady has elected is one of the finest possible but you have to ask her about it yourself. ;) Not to be outdone, on August 6 Angel unexpectedly checked herself into a hospital for a hair transplant (according to Al) or because she felt like a blonde (according to Angel.) :) No offence intended to those naturally afflicted with this handicap. But all seriousness aside, it is frightening how suddenly a serious affliction can strike us. We are all delighted and relieved that things went as smoothly as they did and that there were no permanent effects. Thanks to Lou (ROSE8364) and Shady who tracked her down through independent means. Lou started calling hospitals. Shady tracked down a relative. The love and concern were palpable this month. Callahan's. It's that type of place. Mike would have been proud. But Shady and Angel didn't really have to go to these extremes to remind us of it..:) Cat Came Back On August 13 Cat (CATMOORE) came back to conference! Welcome back Cat! You were sorely missed during your absence! ***********SMASH********** A Newbie Roast On August 7 we welcomed Natalie (ANDERN) with a newbie roast. As is becoming customary, Doc (METCALFR) fired up the coals and "accidentally" spilled BBQ sauce on her. Then she was accidentally tripped and fell smack dab on the grill. A sizzle, a quick prod with a blunt fork, a toast, and Natalie became one of us. Doc provided the toast.

Conference Highlights If you missed the food fight on August 12, well ... at least you came out clean. Bets (BEYOTI) and Joce (JF) got into it in a big way ... what with buckets of syrup and Jell-O and ketchup. AMAX, MAGPIE and Kak all got caught in the crossfire. Then Doc (METCALFR) walked in conveniently wearing a raincoat. Well, don't Joce and Bets cut it off of him ... The Third Gathering The third gathering took place in Toronto from August 23 to 26. Ivana (IVANAC) and Al (KINETIC) made it. Kak was supposed to host it but made some excuse about spending a week in the local cardiac ward instead (for the food of course.) Ivana and Al did drop into the hospital for a visit. Kak was about four shots of morphine to the high side at the time ... so it's not all that clear whether Ivana actually had purple hair or if Al really did have a third eye in the center of his forehead. At least (by some reports) Kak was wearing more than a hospital gown. More on Ivana's and Al's excellent adventure in the October Rag. Forum Notes Joey (JOSEPHFRY) started a forum thread called "Men & Women ... Again" early in the month. Joey's posts are always thought provoking ... particularly when they deal with relationships. The discussion has ranged from infidelity, to date rape and rape ... has questioned whether both males and females play games in their relationships. Somehow, lawyers even got into the discussion (although we dispensed with that in a hurry.) This led to a discussion... By Doc(METCALFR) wondering why there was so much "male bashing" at Callahan's ... and whether this didn't violate the spirit that Spider Robinson had put in his books ... with considerable and probably unresolved debate. Kak (ALKAK000) also posted a hypothesis on "Love and Ego" and whether love inherently required the death of ego. That discussion continues with a wide variety of viewpoints.
