Callahan's March 1996 Bar Rag!

"Shared Joy is Increased, Shared Pain is Lessened"
- Mike Callahan, proprietor of Spider Robinson's fictional Crosstime Saloon.
(And we have made it real!)

Introduction

Please be gentle with me. :) Interim Cub Reporter Bailey is writing this Bar Rag this month only, due to increased demands on KathyC's time. It's a large set of galoshes to fill to write this in her stead, so I won't even try ! (although Kathy in reality has tiny feet.)

Welcome to the March edition of Callahan's Bar Rag ... the monthly chronicle of news and events at Callahan's Virtual Irish Pub. This issue features updates to the Database and the Internet Gateway, Conference schedules and summaries of our Forum discussions. Thanks for joining us, even if you fell in to our establishment through a trap door!

The only toast I know for sure --

"Amor, salud y dinero, y el tiempo para gastarlos!" (Traditional Spanish toast, author unknown). Love, health and money, and the time in which to enjoy them!

Florida Gathering

Around 20 Callahanians met last month in Sarasota, Florida. The weather was beautiful, although no string bikini weather! We enjoyed a picnic at the beach, a wonderful dinner at an authentic Irish pub, but most of all each other's company. Several of the pictures we snapped are in our GIF's database -- check them out. Yes, we really did have as much fun as it seems in the pictures!

Thanks Dave (HARRISER) for a delicious picnic, and a big THANK YOU to KathyC for hosting the event, making the options available for side tours and diversions, and actually admitting knowing us in her home town of Sarasota.

Wanted - Dead Or Alive

Callahan's is looking for new bartenders. If you are someone who likes listening, laughing, and commiserating with new friends, being a bartender in Callahan's may be your online profession! See our banner and forum post for more details. Deadline for Email applications is March 17, 1996, winners will be announced at our St. Patrick's Day festivities.

Conference Notes

Our Valentine's Day party was well attended, I particularly enjoyed meeting several new patrons. Although there were no scheduled conferences this month, our discussions have been lively and have centered around Delphi's future, iGuide's Web site, and our future as a Special Interest Group in Delphi. We want all our patrons to know that Callahan's will still be here and thriving until (and if) the doors close. Join us in conference, start your own discussion, share your wisdom and frustrations. Someone is usually here on the weekends, day or night, and after 6:00 PM Eastern every week night. Your first drink is on the house, after that they're 50 cents. See you soon!

Forum Notes

The threads in our Forum this month were varied and lively. There was one discussion on personal responsibility, romantic movies to watch on Valentine's Day, a poem by new patron DAVIDNMI, and many posts on iGuide and the future of Delphi. We encourage participation in our forum, even on heated topics. All we remind everyone to remember - listen to other people's opinions; treat others with the respect you demand for yourself. And by all means, if you have a poem to share, please post it in our Poetry category.

Database News

Browse through our very large database for GIF's (scanned photographs) of our bartenders, staff and patrons. Look under the Utilities section for a couple of great GIF viewers (my favorite is Compshow). We also have DOS Dlite, PKunzip and many other programs for your downloading pleasure. If you would like to learn how to upload/download, ask any of the staff and tenders for on-the-spot instructions.

New Internet Navigator

If you have a favorite Web site that you would like to access through Callahan's, please feel free to post the site's address in our forum.

Lou (ROSE8364) has added a new site to the Callahan's Navigator, the Electronic Frontier Foundation, a non-profit civil liberties organization which is currently working to eliminate the censorship provisions of the 1996 Telecom law. The navigator can be accessed by typing: INT (to access the navigator) then 9 (to access Government and Politics) and 14 (to access the EFF site.) Also check out the "What's New" new section category, which lists the last 10 sites that have been added. Happy surfing!

Callahanian Web Pages

Browse through our patrons' and staff Web pages:

If you have a favorite Web page, or one of your own, please post the address in our forum and we will add it to the list.

Tips On Netiquette

If you are in a conference room with your friends and the room is not private and includes the words "All Welcome" in its name or is published, please make any newcomers feel welcome and wanted. Our reputation as a friendly place depends on everyone's acceptance of our motto of shared joy and pain. Making new friends and enlarging our online community is a lot of fun. Remember, a newbie is just a friend we haven't met! However, private discussions are acceptable and encouraged, if the topic is one you would not like to share. The same applies here as with published groups -- when someone is in a private conference try to refrain from zending to them or in any way making them feel it's not acceptable to engage in private conversations. We all have times, like Greta Garbo, when we "vunt to be alone."

Letter From The Boss

Well, here it is March and I have been on the staff of Callahan's for two years. It has been a grand and glorious journey from thence to now. I think only Nick ever dreamt we would become this big in such a short time. The staff and I occasionally play this game I call "No you." It goes something like this:

Staff1: "You were the most instrumental person in creating Callahan's"

Staff 2: "No you were the most, with your ability to listen"

Staff 1: "No you were, cause you organize"

Staff 2: "No you..."

Well, you get the idea... I guess my point is that in the months it has taken us to get to where we are I have been humbled by the absolute love and joy each person who works in Callahan's brings to their job. And the level of humility and sense of teamwork they have each brought to it.

One of the guiding principles I have tried to bring to managing Callahan's is "From each according to their abilities, to each according to their needs." And a strong wish to make each person understand they are a vital part of what happens here.

The other thing the staff of Callahan's understands is we don't make Callahan's, we may nurture it and guide it, but it is you, the patrons who make this place, our place, the joyous home it is by making it your place.

Thank you! Cat.
