Callahan's November 1995 Bar Rag!
"Shared Joy is Increased, Shared Pain is Lessened" | ||||
Introduction Welcome to the November edition of Callahan's Bar Rag...the monthly chronicle of news and events at Callahan's Virtual Irish Pub. This issue features updates to the Database and the Internet Gateway, current Polls, Conference schedules and summaries of our Forum discussions. We're glad to have you join us! Let's begin with a toast! "Here is to sharing ideas and creeds...to caring for others, and meeting their needs." - SMASH!!! *** It's Still The Bar Rag!! *** The votes have all been tallied, and the name of our newsletter will remain unchanged. There were many creative suggestions, including:
1. Great Expectations Doc (METCALFR) won the runners up slot with "The Last Shot", but "The Bar Rag" pulled the most votes. *** The Florida Clan Gathering *** The next official Callahan's Clan Gathering will take place in Sarasota, Florida on the weekend of January 12-15, 1996. Everyone is invited to attend and enjoy special events such as dinner in an authentic Irish pub, a tour of the John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art, the Circus Museum, greyhound racing, a Hawaiian Supper Club, and a tropical beach bash! Contact KATHYC for details about where to stay and how to register. Tender Of The Month!! Congratulations to Tracy (DOVE), our 'Tender of the Month' for November! Tracy has been with us for a while, serving up drinks and delivering service with a smile. Thanks, Tracy! Keep up the good work! Conference Highlights October conferences featured a number of serious topics, including an interview with CORSIBARE discussing the naturist lifestyle, and MOONLIGHT1 hosted a conference about Chumash Indian legends. We also had an informative discussion about religious practices and doctrines, and CATMOORE led a question and answer session about Lesbianism. But, we closed the month out in traditional Callahan's style, with a Halloween Masqued Ball! The November conference schedule will honor Veteran's Day and celebrate Thanksgiving, with some technical discussions of the Internet and the World Wide Web. We will continue our regular features, such as Poetry Nights, Punday Nights, Fillmore Jams, and Riddles Nights. Watch the Announcements section and the banners for more information. Forum Notes Religious discussions dominated the Callahan's Forum in October, as we debated historical issues and the authenticity of the Bible, and discussed (sometimes rather heatedly) the differences among us regarding faith and religious practice. The Newsletter-Naming Contest generated lots of interest, as did a variety of commentary about gender relationships. There were a number of exchanges discussing multicultural assimilation, and - perhaps somewhat less taxing - some creative story ideas for Mulder and Scully in The X-Files. Poetry Review - A New Feature Of The Bar Rag! Lou (ROSE8364) has been maintaining the Callahan's Poetry File, faithfully posting it to the database every quarter. As a special feature for The Bar Rag, Lou has offered to showcase selected works of poetry submitted by the many talented poets here in Callahan's. Callahan's 3rd Quarter 1995 Poetry Review Beginning with this issue of Callahan's Bar Rag, we will select a few poems which were either posted in the forum during the previous month or shared during Poetry Night. There were many excellent poems this quarter but three poems, 'The Shirt' (Post 9505 by DOVE), 'Witnessing Well Springs' (Post 9507 by JEANNEK) and 'Death of a Dream' (Post 10114 by CAMELION3), just seemed to reach out and grab me. Several people commented on 'The Shirt' when it first appeared in the forum. It speaks very powerfully about lost love and recovery. I really like 'Witnessing Well Springs.' Each time I read it, I like it more. There is alliteration and repetition and a rhythm that grows on you. It starts with long, lazy sentences that roll through your mind like a slow moving box car and ends with almost a singsong balancing act. Read this one a few times slowly and see if you agree... If I've read a sadder poem than, 'Death of a Dream', it's been awhile. This one makes you want to reach out to Camelion and hold her close.. Lots of forum posts were generated when this poem was posted with most people trying to do just that... Well, that's the first poetry review ! Keep writing ! Lou A Toast: "Here is to harvesting the fruit of our hearts... to sharing the love in our innermost parts." SMASH !!! Poll Results Three new polls are available in the POLL area, in addition to a survey on global pollution posted by SMOKERX. Other polls include on about women in politics, one about relationships, and on truth in advertising. Feel free to create a Poll of your own on whatever topic interests you! To access the Poll area, type POLL at the main menu. Choose BROWSE to select a poll and read the responses (which are anonymous.) You will then have an opportunity to both vote and comment. What's New In The Database Bart (BARTREM) has uploaded two recipes to the Life Enhancement section of the database, just in time for Thanksgiving! Angel posted the transcript of the "Chumash Indian Legends" conference in the General Discussion topic, and three more .GIF files have been added. Sneak a peak at Kevin, and Markie's rendition of Callahan's Bar and Grill. One of the hallmarks of Callahan's has been our friendly atmosphere and our willingness to help others. Tips on how to use Delphi's conference features are always welcome, and help first time visitors feel at home. The best way to offer help is through private messages using the "/send" feature. Explain to the new user how to change his Username to a nickname, and how to use "/action" effectively. You might also send the person an Email message, letting him or her know you enjoyed getting acquainted.
