Toasting during conferences (chats) and on
our message board is a cherished tradition in
Callahan's Saloon and we invite you to
participate! To propose a toast on the
message board, you simply post it - usually in
the "Wishes" folder (and often in
the "Solace" folder) but you can
post a Toast anywhere..:)
To propose a toast in conference, you approach
the chalkline in front of the fireplace. This is
done by typing, "/act approaches the line."
This gives you the undivided attention of everyone
in the room. By this we mean that all other patrons
in the room (who know about this tradition) will type,
"/act listens" and
wait patiently (and silently) for you to
make your toast.
You raise your glass and "pour out whatever joy
or sorrow is in your heart" (i.e. make your
toast.)
Then, with a mighty *** Smash ***, you hurl your
glass into the fireplace. The other patrons,
having respectfully listened to your toast and
approving of it, will then toss their glasses
into the fireplace as well. (Relax, we have an
unlimited supply of glasses!)
And - if you feel the need to talk about your toast,
as is often the case, we will (in some way)
continue to listen as you share. On the other
hand, if you do not want to say another word after
your toast, *no one* will pry. Fast Eddie will
give the boot to anyone even appears to try..:)
This custom of 'shared pain and shared joy' is detailed
completely in the first few pages of the book,
"Callahan's Crosstime Saloon", by Spider
Robinson and a short description also exists on
our
What is Callahans?
page..:)
Callahans is a place of sharing and acceptance... Do
enjoy it with us...!
