[Cortland wrote this poem as a message board response
to Elizabeth Kate who was distraught over whispers and
innuendo she heard about herself on the job. The
editors took the liberty of naming the poem. We think
Cortland did a fine job in setting things straight..:)]
A wall of air there be between
The whispers, and your ear,
To ward their lies and cruel remark
Who skill and talent fear.
Whose envy as if lightning flies
To higher peaks than theirs,
Whose subtle anger brews and breeds
In dark and fetid airs.
And take no thought that what they say
Might injure, cut, or sting;
Who lacks the power to assist
Can harm you in no thing.
