To life! And to the people who make it worth living.

If it wasn't for people who were willing to listen without judging -- or at the very least, didn't comment out loud if they did judge -- I would probably be... practicing being a hermit with more vigor than usual.

So, my toast to everyone here:

L'Chaim - To life
Or something like it...

Manager's Corner

"Reconciling with Friends"

Hi all..

As I write this word comes of a church in the U.S. expelling members because they were Democrats, and the leader of the Democrats in the House of Representatives telling a group of schoolchildren that President Bush is "a loser."

I have long felt the level of personal animosity in American politics has been too high - and growing. I'll bet almost all Americans feel that way. And America is not alone, some reported comments from the leadership of the opposition to Tony Blair in the recent election there were also appalling - at least to me.

We all have a right to expect better from political and religious leaders. But I wonder if they are following the lead of the people? In the end I think it's probably up to each of us individually to lead by example every moment of our lives. It couldn't hurt..:)

When this month's theme was selected I don't think we had political ramifications in mind. I think now though, that all countries, peoples and societies in the world need reconciling as friends. And while reconciling with personal friends may be a worthy goal, it may also be critical to restoring political good will across the board, reversing a trend towards angry confrontation in what seems sometimes like everywhere on earth.

Callahans has always been a place where name-calling is avoided - or frowned upon. Civility and good will are expected. It's been difficult at times - we have our critics. But I hope and believe (both) that Callahans has been and continues to be a positive influence on its patrons - and perhaps in some small way on their corners of the world..:)

Right or wrong, something must be done. And I think we have to do it. We have to stop the name calling and come together again. To celebrate our differences! And we have to insist our political representatives follow our lead.

Where to start? Perhaps with reconciling with a friend?

Message Board News

From Carol:

Chami (Chami98) kicked off an interesting challenge with Use these words in a sentence where you use three words which a previous patron left for you in a sentence, and then leave three new words. It is challenging, funny and creative! Thanks, Chami..:)

Bill (BigFurryGuy) gave us a look at his latest creation with Perspective Ch 10 We all marveled as Bill combines Harry Potter & Spider’s Crosstime Saloon into a wonderful little story... and we're waiting for more!

We had a cross Forum challenge in Callahan’s first ever Cyber Baseball game. The Moon-Saloon Game was on! JayJ kicked it all off with choosing up the teams and playing the game in the past tense. It really got tense for a while there. We have no confirmed winners as the latest rumor has it that everyone is at the bar drinking.

Once in a great while we ask everyone to stand up and introduce themselves. Rue (RueAnne) (formally known as Nightingale ) dropped back into Callahans after a long hiatus ~ Welcome Back Rue ! ChrisRod3 (formally known as Chrismailman) joined us for a blessing after real life took him away for awhile! Welcome back to both..:)

If you want to know how to do something just ask the grand patrons of Callahans. Carol (Ladylaughing) posed a question to David (DgBrewer) about the best coating to use to refinish a kitchen table. We learned some surprising things about toxic chemicals & food preparation in the discussion that followed.

Jennie(JennieLynn) signed up for the net movies by mail and asked for help in selecting her movies. Almost everyone joined in and what a list she has to see now. Enjoy your movie time Jennie !

Newcomer David (Devoid1948) join the poets of Callahans in our ongoing 'kestrel?' thread. I think this thread is the longest running, most entertaining thread on DelphiForums. Since its beginning back in August of 1999 there have been 4, 277 posts (to date) in it. To this, I make a toast
- "To old friends returning"
*** Smash ***

And a personal note: Over the 11 years of Callahan’s existence there have been many hundreds of people come though those grand oak doors to call this place home. Most of those patrons found what they were looking for and then real life took them away. As Spider wrote in the Crosstime Saloon "We raise hope until it is old enough to fend for itself." We are always very pleased to see the old faces return, if only for a little while.

Joke of The Month

Dawn innocently asked, "If you run a budgie over with a lawn mower, is it then called shredded tweet???" which led to an interesting series of responses..:)

Pun of the Month

With Pesach (Passover) soon upon them, the Jewish community in Madrid found themselves in a desperate situation because there was an acute shortage of horseradish. (Now, as you know, horseradish is a key seder ingredient. Not only that, it's a fiery condiment for gefilte fish, and is also known as chrain.)

Well, a hue and cry arose, and the entire community was mobilized in an effort to prevent this shonda (shame, tragedy). But all the European Union countries gave them the same reply: "Sorry, we have none to send."

In desperation, the Rabbi phoned one of his Yeshiva friends in Tel Aviv and begged him to send a crate of horseradish by air freight to Madrid.

Two days before Pesach, a crate of grade Aleph, tear-jerking, Israeli horseradish was loaded at Ben Gurion Airport onto El Al flight 789 to Madrid and all seemed well.

Well, that is until the Rabbi went to the Madrid Airport to claim the horseradish, and was informed that a wildcat strike had just broken out and no shipments would be unloaded for at least four days.

As a result:

Poem of the Month -
"Two Caskets"

Two men in ragged suits
Watch while their friend
Goes in the ground.

Two million crowd the streets
And weep for one
They called their own.

Two souls ascend,
And who can tell
Which will be welcome more?
