Manager's Corner

"Reconciling with Yourself."

Hi all..

What does that phrase mean?

My thoughts on the subject run towards defining and building good self-esteem. I think having good self-esteem means reconciling with oneself.

To reconcile with yourself you must first know yourself. And to know yourself, you must recognize human frailty - your own human frailty. And I don't mean simple physical frailty.

We all have good and bad within us. We are all tolerant and intolerant to some degree. To the extent that we recognize and confront our own intolerance, our own fear, our own insecurities, we can overcome them.

That's part of why Callahans is.

I'm sure you all have thoughts about reconciling with yourself. You'll all chime in with your own points of view. I look forward to the dialog. I know I'll learn from it. I hope you do, too.

Do jump in..:)

Conference News

A Conference/Chat report from Fuzzy

I am no good as a reporter. That's why Jimmy Olsen and Lois Lane got the jobs instead of me but here goes:

On January 20th, 2005 Callahans Saloon held an Inaugural Ball that many feel may have been the best of all. The outstanding list of attendees included the following notable dignitaries, Amber, JayJ, Andrea, Hodgen, Sandy, RheeDee, Carol, Nghnam, RobMagus, Mdawgphred, Obsound, Bones, Andiinny, Lynnmarie6, and Aprilmva. Abe Lincoln hosted until he had to go back to his monument and sit down. That's when I took over. We also had Princess Biscoli, General Lee, Hilary Clinton, Helga and Jess drop by.

So as you can see it was quite a hobnobbing affair. I would imagine in four years we will be contacted by Washington to host the main Inauguration Ball..:)

And A SuperBowl Party report from JayJ

We started at the beginning of the Super Bowl with the singing of the Star Spangled Banner and I think we sounded at least as good as the people on the television.

The Best part was the food everyone brought. I'm not sure if I ever saw this much food in one place. We built a conveyor belt that kept the food moving from person to person so no one got left out of the good snacks.

Some patrons just could not give up on their own team. Carol kept yelling "Go Steelers." Fuzzy wore his "Bears" Jersey and hat, and of course, Walt and Gwen helped JayJ cheer on The Packers.

The event was loads of fun, and the extended chat gave everyone a chance to be there. Of course, there were some yeee haaaa's and some oh poo's when the patrons favorite team did a good or bad play.

Oh - and btw, for those of you who missed both events, the final score was New England Patriots 24, Philadelphia Eagles 21..:)

Message Board News

From Carol:

Just a note about the Conference report about our SuperBowl Party: It has been recorded in the Book o' Rumors that Fuzzy wore a fetching Cheerleading outfit - Just a rumor at this point..:)

Parrish3 found her way back to Callahans in January! We have missed her ~ Welcome back. Upon her return she gave us a glimpse of her love and life with her I'll Love you forever We are all a little more conscientious about putting our socks in the hamper. Mike Irish ask the question way back Oct but the Gathering for 2005 has finally been set and confirmed! Yah The Callahanians are gathering again.

In this Saloon we have a group of avid readers, listeners, and even the movie-goers. Do we expect our favorite authors to be consistent in their writings ? Linda S (HooptieDoo) ask the important question, "What do you do when a favorite author fails you?

Condolences were extended this month to the family and friends of Jack L. Chalker. A toast was made in his honor and a link can be found here to his bibliography.

In other news, Spider Robinson's "Callahans Crosstime Saloon" has now been released on CD from Blackstone Audio! The question was raised as to how one could get a hold of this book on audio five years. Our denizens were creative <g> but now it is out there to buy at a very reasonable rate. And the question was posed, Have you read Callahan's Crosstime Saloon? Some surprising answers came forth..:)

Spyder(SpyderLady60) came to Callahans one dark and stormy night (wait that's for Tall Tales night) and asked the age old question, "Why do we need to use labels to identify people?" in her Liberal/Conservative - Far Left/Far Right thread.

Polls are always fun, some thought provoking and some just silliness.. Take a gander at these fun polls : Is U.K an Island? , Is it stealing when you take home... We even question the integrity of Pizza in Pizza Should be ....

"Shared Pain is lessened,
Shared Joy increased.
Thus we refute empathy" is the motto of Callahans but sometimes we reach out and ask the question, What is hope? We find that each of us may define it differently but the underlying belief is the same.

Joke of The Month

A magician gets a job on the Titanic. During his performance the captain's loud mouthed parrot shouts out "It's up his sleeve, it's up his sleeve" and ruins his act.

The next night the parrot again jumps in yelling, "It's in his pocket and he's swapped them over". Throughout the entire voyage no matter how good a trick the magician does, the parrot always spoils it.

Then the boat hits the fateful iceberg and sinks into the freezing depths. The magician manages to get into a lifeboat and is joined by the parrot.

At first the bird refuses to talk but after two weeks adrift it finally breaks down. "Okay," it says, "you win, what have you done with the ship.?"

Pun of the Month

Our local hermit lives in a hole in the ground.

I felt sorry for the guy until I got a peek into his hole.

He has a computer down there with an Internet connection.

All this time I thought... .

Poem of the Month -
"On a Long Death"

When every time you died another grief
Wore out with use,
And every year each tear became
A little harder for the soul to take;
Still when I stood to say your spirit safe
Into the void,
There were yet tears enough to fill the lake
From which in time we all must all drink,
And offer Grace.

Heartsick, all comfort flown upon a storm,
Such winter as if never
Could a warmer season come;
I rise, serene at last,
The present no account, to face the future;
All the past
Cleansed of grief’s demons,
Wiser, to my tasks.
And offer Grace.

-- Cortland (KA5S) January 25, 2005

Closing Quote

"Whoever is spared personal pain must feel himself called to help in diminishing the pain of others. We must all carry our share of the misery which lies upon the world."
