Opening Toast

"Here here - I'll drink to that..
"To Cold Showers Shared With New Friends"

*** Smash! ***

- Carol (LADYLAUGHING) September 18, 2004

Manager's Corner

"Friendlier!"

Hi all..

Lordy - won't we all be happy to see the American election done with and over!?!

Our R.I.P folder remains a focus of my time here. Cortland, a long time friend and patron in Callahans brought it to our attention that some threads were becoming perhaps too contentious..

I responded by reminding all the patrons of Callahans that we are a community of friends - and that our posts to each other should reflect this.

Our goal should be to be more than simply respectful, I think. We should be friendlier..:)

It's been awhile I think since we had a full report on our message board and conference (chat) activites. Thank to the efforts of Sue, JayJ, Sandra, Bits, Carol, and Jennie, this issue is replete with details..:)

Oh - and while looking over the Calliversary dates, focus a bit on Mike Irish and Mitzi. They've been here a long time. In Internet years I think it's 72 and 56 respectively..:)

Conference News

A Conference/Chat report from JayJ:

As we all watched, the greens of the northern hemisphere summer slowly changed to the hues of Autumn. Callahanians began the task of yard work, house work or late summer travels. Sounds like Jennielyn and her hubby (Wes)had a wonderful camping trip to end their summer. Andrea has been involved in SCA and Robmagus is practicing to be a pirate.

There were new faces in chat as well as some that have not been there for awhile. Ladylyris has joined us along with Jallenecs and Fireman. They have been very welcome additions to our growing family. Fireman inspired the room to take a virtual ride on a fire truck, turning on the siren and lights. He also shared some interesting fire safety tips with us. The upcoming election had its moments in chat. It was decided that we would campaign for Fuzzy for our next President. Jennilyn quickly took to the streets, proclaiming Fuzzy was the man we needed. JayJ decided that if Fuzzy were elected, it would be a time to paint the White House a different color for a change. Perhaps Green and Gold would be a good choice? Those of us "up here" will all settle in now for winter and the holidays to come. We look forward to sharing in chat as we ready ourselves for family and friends.

Message Board News

From Sandra:

Games Folder

It's obvious that our denizens are not only "gamers" but very active ones. I wonder if Dawn (DawnLStewart) imagined in September of 2002 when she started the Word Association game that it would still be going on today. With over 4000 posts too! Wow! Check it out and join in. Maybe we can break a record for the longest running online game.

Carol (Ladylaughing) started the Scrabble Drabble Scrabble fun. Tim, Chris, and Jennie put up a good challenge but it was Gwen (Punstergal) who came up with the 148 point word, "pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicovolcanokoniosis." Cool word, but can you use it in a sentence?!

Cyberrapto2 challenged everyone to a "mind-twisting" quiz. Carol, Bones, KaptnKate and Mikel took the challenge, brave souls all. They all put in good efforts but Bones was the first to solve all the riddles. Good work, Bones! Can't wait to see what you all do for the next one.

Jennie's New Word game continued through the month. Check it out and join in. It looks like lots of fun.

From Sue:

Creative Writing Folder

Carol tweaked everyone’s imagination by posting a picture and encouraging others to relate a story about the picture. The responses were indeed creative, resourceful and varied. We have proof of the talent of the following Callahans Patrons: - Wulfkub, Walt, TimInBC, Bones, RobMagus, Dave (FlatbushSkp), Linda S. (HooptieDoo), Thaytor and the illustrious KaptainKate. It was quite interesting to see the direction each writer took off in. So interesting, in fact, that Wulfkub began a second thread with a new picture. Once again, the creative juices were flowing and the clever writers did not disappoint. Wooly (WizopArnie) got on board this time along with Mikel (Pewterpot). We hope to see more of this creativity in the future. Don’t hide your lamp under a bushel folks!

Books, Movies Folder

Silky started a thread called Whatcha reading this summer? This gave us both an opportunity to learn more about one another and a long list of books to put on our wish list for Christmas. Books mentioned included "The Da Vinci Code" and "Angels and Demons" by Dan brown, and along the same line the trilogy of books written by Daniel Silva about Gabriel Alon, an art restorer who is also a (good) assassin "English Assasin", "The Confessor" and the newest is "A Death in Vienna."

Let's see I am rereading R.A. Salvatore's Dark Elf series just finished the Marion Zimmer Bradley's "Darkover." In two weeks I plan to start Piers Anthony's "Xanth" book 1 till end. I hope to restart the "Future History" saga by Robert Heinlein or possibly "Foundation"by Asimov.

The reading choices of Callahan’s denizens vary widely, from thrillers to fantasy, from mystery to non-fiction. Several people enjoy reading books that are written in series about a particular character, or they really enjoy a certain writer and eagerly anticipate the release of a new book by their favorite writer or about their favorite hero or heroine. Rereading the Callahan’s series by Spider Robinson was also suggested, of course. Before you make out your Chistmas wish list check out this thread. You may even get some gift ideas for others on your list.

From Jennie:

Callahans News Folder

On September 1st our beautiful 'tender, Carol took roll call and then told us the drinks were on the house. We hope she meant in glasses on the roof because otherwise, what a mess!! Drinks for everyone on the house, all drippy and sticky ::shudder:: Anyway, I am wondering if she had a vision of the coming Delphi meltdown where we found ourselves scattered in the wind. Ah, but that hasn't happened yet. Well, it did but not in time for this Bar Rag. You see Callahans can be anywhere in time and sometimes we forget which ficton we are in. It truly will all become clear when you visit us.

There was a lot of talk about grand babies in the Callahan's News folder! When one of us has a blessing, we all share in it! Congratulations to all the grandparents! You have survived your children and your revenge is nearing completion as your children have children that act just like they did ;)

Of course you can always find Conference/Chat announcements in our Callahan's News folder, too. There is always a chat starting at (around) 9:00 p.m. eastern. but you can often find a reminder here. Sometimes you can find neat little links that you might have never expected. Carol posted a link to the Callahan's Cookbook and what a delicious link it is!!

Keep an eye on this folder for new information and reminders... it is all about all of us.

Special Interest Folder

The Special Interest folder is always a scattered folder. Hmmm, is that why Carol asked me to do the blurb on it. Scattered, Jennie? Wait, where was I? :)

Oh, yeah, Special Interest found Bones on 4 wheels for 2 days... 4 wheel driving that is in his Jeep. He shared some great pictures with us!! Carol went from tech support for her Etch-a-Sketch to tech support for cleaning a family portrait. I guess that makes her as scattered as I am, at least, right?

Of course, everything is not always light and fun. We kept in mind the hurricane victims in Florida and posted regarding Red Cross donations. While our very own 'tender Bits, volunteered her time and ability to help her neighbors. We are so proud of her and happy to have her among us..:)

Joke of The Month

An older lady gets pulled over for speeding...

Older Woman: Is there a problem, Officer?
Officer: Ma'am, you were speeding.

Older Woman: Oh, I see.
Officer: Can I see your license please?

Older Woman: I'd give it to you but I don't have one.
Officer: Don't have one?

Older Woman: Lost it, 4 years ago for drunk driving.
Officer: I see...Can I see your vehicle registration papers please.

Older Woman: I can't do that.
Officer: Why not?

Older Woman: I stole this car.
Officer: Stole it?
Older Woman: Yes, and I killed and hacked up the owner.
Officer: You what?
Older Woman: His body parts are in plastic bags in the trunk if you want to see.

The Officer looks at the woman and slowly backs away to his car and calls for back up. Within minutes 5 police cars circle the car. A senior officer slowly approaches the car, clasping his half drawn gun.

Officer 2: Ma'am, could you step out of your vehicle please!
The woman steps out of her vehicle.

Older woman: Is there a problem sir?
Officer 2: One of my officers told me that you have stolen this car and murdered the owner.
Older Woman: Murdered the owner?
Officer 2: Yes, could you please open the trunk of your car, please.

The woman opens the trunk, revealing nothing but an empty trunk.

Officer 2: Is this your car, ma'am?
Older Woman: Yes, here are the registration papers. The officer is quite stunned.

Officer 2: One of my officers claims that you do not have a driving license. The woman digs into her handbag and pulls out a clutch purse and hands it to the officer.

The officer examines the license. He looks quite puzzled.

Officer 2: Thank you ma'am, one of my officers told me you didn't have a license, that you stole this car, and that you murdered and hacked up the owner.

Older Woman: Bet the liar told you I was speeding, too.

Pun of the Month

We have a new employee at the local Home Depot. He just moved here from Mexico and has proven to be very knowledgeable and helpful to the sawdust challenged like myself.

Yesterday I needed his guidance after ruining several pieces of wood with my newly purchased belt sander. A fast trip to the store led to the retro question, " Can you tell me the way to sand, Jose?"

As Reynoldo lit the votive candle at the grotto for San Jose de los Platanos and prayed for the healthy delivery of his first child, he heard a disembodied voice say, "Your daughter will be 17 inches long," to which Reynoldo replied, .
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.

"do you know the weight, too, San Jose?"

Poem of the Month -
"Times Seven"

Searching

View from on high
stream meandering slow
pare prairie lonesome and windblown
empty.

Snowfall

covers the field
comforts the barren sod
gently enfolds those who wait there
forever

Windows

shadows linger
night descending without
waiting longing yearning watching
alone

Voices

transcending time
lost to the hearing world
remembering, loving, sadness
alone

Soft Rain

covers the field
giving a gift of life
dry earth accepts with waiting arms
downpour.

Sundown

night shuts the door
filling my thoughts with fear
amber appearing over the rim
morning.

Wild geese

all flying free
black of night, white of moon
solitude phantoms of the night
return.
