"Ascribing Negative Motivation!"
Hi all..
I have railed against ascribing negative motivation (especially to
those with whom we disagree) for years. Political pundits of all
shades ascribe motivation these days, in fact it seems many
"talking heads" do little else.
We've seen an increase in ascribing negative motivation in our
R.I.P. folder in recent months. I think Callahans is diminished
when it happens because it's not a fair practice and I'd like
to explain why I think so. Take an example:
Some people believe the U.S. should develop its oil reserves
in the Alaskan wilderness. Others disagree. It's a bone fide
issue of contention..:)
If we're discussing the issue on the board and someone asserts that
a public figure supports drilling for Alaskan oil because his
friends will make money doing so, that person *may* be correct.
Or not.
Put yourself in the shoes of someone who supports developing those
oil reserves. He might think it would be a good way to reduce
America's dependence on foreign oil. That's his motivation
or rationale. How does that person respond to someone's assertion
about a public figure's motivation? He doesn't see the point of
the assertion - but - he also can't read minds any more than the
next person. The assertion is unrefutable.
The issue itself doesn't depend on anyone's motivation. Reasonable
people can take either side without regard to anyone's (implied
negative) motivation for proposing or supporting it.
Society at large is currently playing the negative motivation game.
Many people, good honest people, have fallen into the trap. So I
want to ask you all a favor:
In Callahans, treat one another as friends. Pry into each other's
thinking in the hope of learning something new. If you're tempted
to ascribe motivation to a public figure or fellow patron with
whom you disagree, please ascribe only positive motivation! When
it comes to reading minds, let's give all people the benefit of
the doubt.
It's not about who is right or wrong. Becoming and remaining friends,
even with those with whom we disagree, is what Callahans is all about.

Joke of The Month
The other day I was standing in the park wondering why
Frisbees get bigger and bigger the closer they get . .
..then it hit me...

Pun of the Month
I was reading today of a rich widow who spent many years
caring for stray cats and, latterly, had also bought and
maintained a donkey sanctuary which looked after a wide
range of neglected and elderly beasts.
Growing old herself, she tried to ensure the continuation
of the work by providing a substantial annual prize and
award for those who had done most towards the welfare of
these two groups of animals.
Unfortunately, despite the money and the attractive
presentation piece, the dual requirement meant that it was
very difficult to find contenders each year.
But then...

Poem of the Month -
" "
What sense to breathe the same stale air?
Remove the hood!
Fresh air
Churning clouds
Blowing breeze
What sense to see the same old sights?
Remove the blinders!
Serene sights
Sparkling lights
Moving scenes
What sense to never know the new?
All senses engaged!
Feel!
Experience!
Let the blood flow and the dust shake off your shoulders!
Come run with me around the tree!
Let us picnic beside the stream with the ants
And the wind and the joy of just being alive!
