A response to DragonRose..:)
Manager's Corner
Hi all..
Well - it's clear that no Gathering 2004 has materialized..:(
We had generous offers this year from CatFantastic to meet
in Toronto, and from Carol to return to Cincinatti but my
ability to plan the event was impaired, and the response to
each offer among staff and 'tenders left me wondering if
a formal Gathering would be successful. There were just
so few of us who could make it..:(
As far as my impaired planning ability, I had a rather minor
surgery on my ankle which required a skin graft. It should
have been a minor inconvenience but the graft failed and I
was laid up, or on crutches, and in pain of various sizes far
longer than I had expected. Sitting at a computer slowly
evolved from being agony to being painful to being merely
uncomfortable but progress took many weeks. And those were
crucial weeks where planning a Gathering required focus..
The good news is that we've missed Gatherings in the past
and come back strong..:) We may have a winter (in North
America) Gathering in a warm clime in early 2005 just to
see how many snowbirds will want to escape the weather and
toast the great frozen North..:)
But I am sorry for disappointing many of you -
especially CatFantastic and Carol. They are both wonderful
and generous friends to this community.

Message Board News
From Carol:
The message board flourished and a new 'Tender was born this month.
Chris (Emettman) became our most recent 'Tender.
He has been caught hanging out in all the folders wearing his
stone-washed apron! Jp (JP8), who has extensive
'tender experience, offered Chris a few pointers and gifts to use:
1) a shield of protection - to ward off those unexpected blows
2) the advanced edition "how to read typo" handbook
3) "Toastmasters" 1001 toasts ( jelly not included)
4) a small bottle of empathy
5) a medium bottle of humor
6) an extra large economy size bottle of tolerance.
Welcome to Tenderhood Chris !
Bob (DragonRose) came busting through our front
doors and told us about his hope for our children (and family
members) serving in the military with
Phone Calls Home.
Kethryn, Aelith, Walt, Sue, Punstergal and others
weighed in on the characteristics of Superheros in
So, you have to be an orphan to be a superhero?
Dawn started the
word association thread way back in
September 2002 and by June of 2004 it has reached over 4,000 posts.
It's a fun little game and it carries on..:)
Tim (Brunotim) and Sue finally signed
on the dotted line and purchased their first home. It didn't come
without tenants though. Things are beginning to brighten up after
a few shortfalls. Congratulations Tim and Sue
Many moons (and a few years) has passed and our denizens are
still curious about Walt's bird feeder and
how to outsmart a squirrel. The debate goes on in
Lessons From the Bird Feeder.
[Authors note: I don't think it's possible to outwit a squirrel!]
Sue (Suemo) continues to be our Quotemaster (or
would that be mistress?) and she started a real zinger os a thread with
What comes easy for you? Many find themselves
surprised that what one person finds so easy another can find to
be so difficult in life.
Jennie (Jennielyn811) started us on a long journey
down the path of gender and acceptance and we learned that many
ladies felt they were just
One Of the Guys. We also discovered guys who
want to be "one of the girls" (Think Louella!)
From time we time we talk about things no one seems to know anything about.
Would we attend, would we be afraid to attend, would we like this kind of
thing. We also discussed the
Burning Man Festival held each year in the
Nevada desert.
What makes for a long standing friendship? We may not have all
the answers but we still ask the questions. Jennielyn posed the
question in the
Attributes of Friendship thread where we
really get down to the heart and soul of the matter.

Joke of The Month
It seemed like the hottest day of the year as what's
his name trudged up the hill dragging his what ya
callit with him. He knew if he worked hard enough
he would find the thing he was looking for. He had
his map, and what's her name had told him exactly
where the whatyamacallits were.
He put on his gloves and began perusing the map,
and giving the landscape a once over.
Soon he knew where to begin and he dragged his what
ya callit to the spot and found a whichamadingy with
which to begin the search.
They were everywhere, just like what's her name had
said and he soon had his what ya callit filled to the
brim with tons of the whatyamacallits. It was time to
head back down the hill.
His whatyamacallits were safely stashed in his what ya
callit and he sang a sweet song as he trudged down the
hill to the waiting thingamajig where he unloaded his
what ya callit, safely storing the whatyamacallits in
the back seat.
Life is good..:)

Pun of the Month
The new crew had heard that their captain was a strange
bird. Pappy Red was constantly speaking of the Old Gods,
and how the Old Lore could brighten the lives of anyone
who would take his teachings to heart.
It took time, but six months at sea had led to the
conversion of most of the crew, who were only too happy
to share the word, once they finally got into an English
port.
A knight overheard their talk, and made a few comments
about there being only one true God. The crew decided to
work on the knight, but his attention was always drawn
to something else, someone walking by, a hawker selling
goods, etc.
The men thought that if they could get the knight's
undivided attention, they might succeed in converting him
into a follower of the Old Lore. One of the guys borrowed
a chair from an inn. The crew hustled the knight to the end
of a pier, sat him in the chair, and proceeded to regale
him with stories of how the Old Lore had brightened their
lives.

Poem of the Month -
"The Fox's Tale"
The fox is in the brush, all but his tail,
and the paint of shadows coat him in late
Autumn leaves. He makes the forest's tile
his haven, safe, were his end not in light.
