Opening Toast

Sometimes when we are wrong we tend to speak more and learn more.
Very often, only when we are wrong and still listening do we go in depth enough to learn.
And this only happens when the ones who are right are patient and do not give up.

To being wrong
*****SMASH*****
And being willing to admit it
*****SMASH*****
To being right
*****SMASH*****
And being patient enough to teach
*****SMASH*****

Manager's Corner

Hi all..

Our overall theme for 2004 is "Body, Mind and Spirit" and February's theme was " Limitations." As you might imagine, we had great fun and serious discussion with this topic. However, the theme, coupled with some unkind comments on our board, put me in something of a reflective mood for some time these past few weeks.

I think it's time I explained again about our R.I.P. folder. For if you don't know why the initials of Poilitics, Issues and Religion are reversed in the folder title, you should..:)

While we do indeed discuss politics, issues and religion in the folder, that's not the reason for its existence. It is there to help us become more tolerant. It's not there for us to make points, or to persuade others, it's there to help us understand what the other person is saying in the hope that by understanding, we can appreciate and respect the 'other' point of view.

The premise of the folder is that we are all friends sitting around talking to one another. Further, if we are not friends to begin with, we become friends by discussing issues of disagreement. At the very least we speak respectfully to each other as we try to understand and appreciate each other's point of view. Much good can come of this.

For awhile this month I lost faith in our ability to understand this as a community of friends. But the community has regrouped. I see the issues of the day being discussed without (much) rancor again. I've seen edges softening..:) And I look forward to the day when people asking each other friendly questions (in an effort to understand) becomes commonplace again.

And I am grateful, yet again, to the community for allowing me to have faith that this is at least part of what Callahans is..:)

Conference News

A regularly scheduled broadcast from Jennie:

I signed in early tonight [February 5th] and got to wish Amber good health as she worries about an ear infection. Ouch! And more ouchies for Andrea as she discovers her sprained wrist is a stress fracture in her dominant hand. See her thread in "Bad Day" and wish her well.

She left out of her post that she fractured her wrist by carrying 7 big rolls of masking tape on her arm. Just a warning for all of us.

We discovered JayJ's picture tacked to the dart board. But it was probably meant very nicely as the darts were all heart shaped. She thinks this was Lou's doing. Hmm?

We commiserated with Mouser about his 18 inches and still falling snow. Though it was brought to our attention that he is a snow magnet. San Antonio didn't get snow for 47 years and the year he was there it did snow. This was in 1978, how much snow have they gotten since he has been gone? Not much, I would bet.

Fuzzy discovered his snow predictions dropped from 10 inches down to 5 and apparently he sent it JayJ's way as her prediction went from 2 inches to 8. Fuzzy did mention that he hoped JayJ didn't get all his snow but I think he was just feeling guilty for sending it her way.

And despite the demons that picked on JayJ, we saw and made some new friends, Guestoid, JohnMichael1, and Lunanik (who has been seen around this board but joined chat for the first time.) Welcome everyone!! Guestoid joined us on his dinner break at work. John is a returning Delphi member from 1996. We may have seen him at our local comedy clubs too. I will have to start asking every comic I see if it is him :)

JayJ's new haircut looks mah-vel-ous! She led us in dancing to Woolly Bully tonight!! Fuzzy bravely teased the demons who sent him packing. He claims it was an intentional prank on his part but I believe he didn't want to admit that he brought it upon himself. And of course there is no escape from those demons. I was booted soon after Walt joined us and I was back just as Walt was leaving. ~~~~~~~~(that is a wave) to Walt and Sancho!

LeCygne dropped by for a visit tonight too! Always nice to see returning faces! She did give me a few notes on last night's chat. I have eyes, even when I am not looking! It's good to be the reporter.

I think Fuzzy learned to dance quite well tonight. Oh, wait. That was the lizards. JayJ dropped them down Fuzzy's shirt. Well, you see his head had swollen so much it wouldn't fit through the door. So of course we all had to help bring it down to size since we goddesses (Fuzzy said so, so we must be) helped in making it so big in the first place. All we did was give the man hugs! I swear, really!!

Any animal lovers out there? We heard about Mouser's cat who likes to crawl into his boots. Must be some ferret blood in that cat. My ferrets all love to crawl into Wes86d's (hubby) boots, too. And JayJ regaled us with a story of her dog that ATE all her basement steps. Every tread! So, to sum up this report, chat is good!!

Bring your face around the place some night and we'll supply the drink, food and music! Just bring your typing fingers and your dancing shoes!!

The mostly seeing,

Jennie

Message Board News

From Sylph [LIBRARYLION]:

Two of our folders spurred interesting threads in February, in light of our March theme of "Limitations".

The Galaxies, Geeks and Gadgets folder featured Beyond Emoticons, started by Bits[LBT1], about overcoming the limitations of electronic communication. Workarounds, the concept of whether a username could be freeing or limiting, and how the Internet has changed the way we think of one another... or not were all discussed.

The Books, Movies, and Music folder had its share of interesting threads which helped Callahanians expand their minds about topics they may or may not have thought about before. Carol[LADYLAUGHING] started the thread about Mel Gibson's movie, My Review - The Passion Of The Christ, which led to folks talking about the limits of their upbringing and experience.

Also Serenity Sue[SUEMO] has been reading The Da Vinci Code, which spurred an interesting conversation about symbolism and its limits by association. and Kate [KAPTNKATE] broadened our minds in the world of music with her commentary on a recent Sarah Brightman performance.

Joke of The Month

While on maternity leave, a woman from on office brought in her new bundle of joy. She also had her seven year old son with her.

Everyone gathered around the baby, and the little boy asked, "Mommy, can I have some money to buy a soda?"

"What do you say?" she asked.

Respectfully, the boy replied, "You're thin and beautiful."

The woman reached in her purse and gave her son the money.

Poem of the Month -
"Rained On"

How big, Noah is said To have asked his God;
How big IS a cubit?
I lost my hat and so
The rain runs off my half-bald skull
And though I blink as if I had eyeball wipers
It does not help.

The rain runs down my neck,
It makes me cold and wet
And I am not even half of the way
To the grocery store yet.

If I rode my bike it would be much faster
But with no rear fender
Road dirt goes up my raincoat's back
Like a brown stripe on a soggy skunk
And I smell about as bad.

Home is where, when you get there,
There is always enough hot water
For a bath.
And I'll have a cup of hot mulled wine
