Manager's Corner
Hi all..
Okay - summer is here. Well - on the North American
continent anyway.. It's hot. Many of you have begun
vacations already but I see our message board remains
very active this year. (And it's not all politics!)
The war in Iraq and its aftermath have cause tensions
to be high around the globe - I wonder if we cling
more to each other when tensions run high? I hope
that's it but note also that Poerty about Callahans
traditionally experiences an upsurge in June and July..
In any event, I'm proud and happy about the way we
talk to each other here. But I've always
been so. Thank you all..
Gathering 2003 is upon us and all my time seems to be
devoted to preparing.. Which is another way of saying
all my time is being spent trying to keep up with
Carol's plans..:)
I am completely in need of a vacation and look forward
to spending time with you all in Ohio next month.
Can't wait!
Lou
Conference News
From Carol:
Saturday nights in the summer and folks seems to be out
playing in the summer sun. Walt (WWW3)
and Fuzzy(FUZZY69) stayed in the comforts
of AC and debated the merits of kitchen appliances. Think
that's amusing? LOL well, not until they picked up on
whether or not the girl at Walmart would balk at asking
her which Isle they could find a life. <g>
After some consideration of the possibilities of Walmart
having *a life* to begin with Walt grappled with the
possibility of returning a life in exchange for another.
Fuzzy, thinking like the guy who knows returns, reminded
Walt to always get the *Satisfaction guaranteed or your
money back* policy up front.
Nanc (NANC) dropped in for a while.. (Ed
note: Nanc, is a past Tender of Calllahans and hosted Sunday
Shenigangs and helped kick off our Pundays many a moon ago.)
After some introduction of the others in the room, Walt
reminisced about days gone from five years earlier when he first
drifted into callahans and Nanc was there to greet him. After
serving up a blessing Walt let out the fact that he was now a
card caring Liberal.... Poor Nanc almost fainted dead away. The
good news is Nanc has now bought a house and is in the process
of renovating it which takes up much of her free time.
MME (Mike Mace) joined us for a while to play
(Welcome Back, Mike!) Mike has been a patron for a good long
time but tends to want to play with his street rod these days...
(Go Get'em Mike!). Squirrels1 paid us a visit
as well - We're proud of Squirrls! Making plans to enter college
and all. Looking for the future. Wants to be a tour guide in London.
We all laughed as Fuzzy told us of his aspiration of being a
mattress tester. Sounds like the perfect job - clock in, crawl in,
sleep like a baby, wake up, stretch out, fill out a time report
and go home.. Sure sure - but everyone will be standing in line
for that occupation!
Dusty lead Squirrels in a *mean geezer shuffle*..
Thing is, while Squirrels was mixing between techno and break-dance,
poor Fuzzy used his walker and tried to keep up.
GriddleBone slipped into chat - which is always
a delight . Saturday Matinee with Walt also saw some new faces in
chat.. Welcome Panda & SJ (smithjohn1) the night
went on with giggles and laughs and some heavy discussion of
Callahan's Key. I'm not sure but Fuzzy and Griddlebone were fighting
over the shovel - the competition was one with who could dig themselves
into the deeper hole.
Exciting news:
Scooby Got hitched! Seems he was late for his own
wedding, the dinner and the picnic... This could be a good sign that
things will be better later in life .... congratulations
Scooby & Kumqwat!!
Fuzzy and Dusty are traveling into the Northwest for a few days....
I hope Fuzzy takes it easy on the pretty flight attendants.
During Sunday Shenanigans Carol was AFK for only a few
minutes and returned to find her flower garden filled with the most
lovely flowers... but for some reason they looked a bit stiff (almost
plastic-like) Trusting Jayj, Andrea and Amber as she
does she knew they would not let anyone play in the garden, but still,
she is wondering why those blooms have not wilted after all this time...
Is someone being sneaky here? and where did this bright red tomato
come from??
Jadoft's son just purchased a new Suzuki - 850 and
Andrea threatened to dress him in a pink flower shirt from the thrift
shop so... Safety first! Everyone will see him coming <g>
Message Board News
June spurred a variety of threads on our message board.
In honor of our Tenth Calliversary, bits started a thread about
Spider asking folks to tell us when they
first read one of his books..:)
In R.I.P., Carol (Ladylaughing) questioned
the difference between
Spanking and Abuse when it comes to
our kids. Also in the RIP Folder everyone put in at least two
cents worth with
Why Can't We Have The 10 Commandments? Both
sides were discussed with a few additions from the other sides.
Sometimes there are hundreds of sides to a discussion..:)
And the quote,
Success is the sole earthly judge of right and
wrong (Adolf Hitler) lead to a lengthy discussion about
judgement.
Our Books, Movies & Music Folder was really
jumping this month!
American Gods actually started back in April
and continued throughout June. Callahanians are reading or
rereading this book and taking this thread to greater levels of
excitement everyday.
Bits started an amusing thread with
American Films: Heroes & Villians. This thread
tells a lot about the patrons of Callahans. Who we see as villains
and who we see as heroes are vastly different. The bad guy isn't
always the villi an nor is the good guy always the hero.
We also discussed
American Films: Greatest Laughs We can find
humor in the worst of situations.
In Galaxies, Geeks, & Gadgets Sylph stepped to the
line for
A toast to paper and pen. ... they never let you
down until you run out of ink. *** SMASH!! *** after having troubles
with her computer. Lou suggested origami... until Cane reminded him
that this was a family forum. We are still a bit curious about that one!
In Poetry Cortland shared several poems this
month including:
Two Voices,
Painting,
Classic Car,
JailBird and
The Rebel Taxpayer.
Kate chimed in with
Into the Ashes and
I Took the Time.
Also this month, Bee (LADYGEEZA) set the
table with candles and provided delicious food in the
Who's Coming to Dinner thread. In it,
there are 8 places at the table - one is for you, the other
7 are fictional characters of your choice and the
question is "Who would you choose to eat at your
table?"
There were many other threads in the General
folder this month, too. In late May Jennielyn started a thread
entitled
Milestones - Earliest Memories which
continued throughout June.

Joke of The Month
Two women met for the first time since graduating from high
school. One asked the other, "You were always so
organized in school, did you manage to live a well planned
life?"
"Oh yes," said her friend. "My first marriage
was to a millionaire; my second marriage was to an actor; my
third marriage was to a preacher; and now I'm married to an
undertaker.
Her friend asked, "What do those marriages have to do with
a well planned life?"
"One for the money, two for the show, three to get ready,
and four to go."

Poem of the Month -
"Two Voices"
A car pulled up, two men got out,
Walked toward my door,
Their uniforms were a silent shout.
Announcing what they came here for.
-------------------------The house blew up, and bricks came down
-------------------------We laid the bodies on the ground
-------------------------Our enemy hides to fight,
-------------------------Hides in the air, the dark of night.
There was an accident, they said.
The helicopter burned.
You son is dead.
You will be paid what he had earned.
-------------------------The Imam calls for us to die
-------------------------To throw ourselves against the sky
-------------------------Cut off each unbeliever's head
-------------------------Make them objects of fear and dread.
They cannot grant what he had earned,
Laughing children, a loving wife.
A nation's gratitude, I've lately learned
Is not enough to pay for life.
-------------------------The Infidels engrave each name
-------------------------On their black, hidden, wall of shame
-------------------------We do not neglect our dead so
-------------------------And year by year, their numbers grow.
Does somewhere else, a father hate
The Causes that drive sons to die?
And does he ask, and all too late?
Does someone ever wonder why?
-------------------------My mother says she's proud.
-------------------------I go where only martyrs are allowed.
-------------------------Tears streak her face although she smiles;
-------------------------I'll remember, through these last miles.
........... They embraced each other, finally,
........... Bodies torn, thrown together in the stones.
........... Why, no one left could see,
........... Just broken, bloody, tumbled bones.

"Love one another and you will be happy.
It's as simple and as difficult as that."
