Opening Toast

I dedicate this toast to:

Ricardo Munguia,
Kaare Lund,
Ahmed Moalim Mohammed,
Alec Collett,
and all the other aid workers
who have been murdered, beaten, kidnapped,
raped, as they seek to wield their teaspoons
in order to make the lives of the most
vulnerable people in our world better.

I will remember you, I will keep the faith that together we can make things better.

Manager's Corner

Hi all..

I don't usually highlight the poem of the month here but do please read Andrea's heart-breaking yet hopeful poem below.

May is Milestones Month at Callahans and I'm pleased to announce that we had a few wonderful milestones in Callahans in April..:)

First, Sylph, at long last, has agreed to become our newest message board 'tender! AKA Library Lion, she has always and will continue to keep our literary prowess keenly honed and maintain a friendly board doing so. Do take the time to thank her when you see her..:)

And Sandra had a... a baby! We all shared and continue to share Sandra's joy in welcoming Sean Patrick into the world. Should we be thanking Sandra? :)

And another milestone: Major hostilities in Iraq are over and I think most of the world is breathing a sigh of relief. No one can be sure what the long term future holds for the region but the world is changed forever, and I am quite sure we'll continue to discuss developments derived from the war as they unfold.. I'm hopeful and rather looking forward to hearing everyone else's views..:)

And finally - a reminder. July will mark our 10th Calliversary online. Our Gathering in Cincinnati will take on added significance because of it.
Do try to join us if you can..:)

Conference News

From Carol:

Sunday Night at the races? I think so!

HiAndrea got a jump start at the Slug race last night (April 13th) in chat with her friendly (yet slimy) slug. We've unsure just how she came to name her slug *fuzzy* but nonetheless Fuzzy started off a winner.

Dusty spent a few minutes before the race walking her slug. Seems folks drank quite a few beers pondering *just how long does it take to walk a slug*. We figure Dusty will be back "eventually" to enter the race. I made a simple suggestion that we use soap under the slug. What could be better than a "slug on a rope" <g>

Kate came stumbling in after a day of curling. Nope, It wasn't her hair - She and other adults put up a real fight but alas her students could curl faster and more accurately. <g>

As the race began Hiandrea hid the salt from Fuzzy... We're wondering what Fuzzy had in mind for Andrea's Slug (appropriately named Fuzzy). Carol's 4 inch Slug Gomer, was a softy. Gomer just sorta hung there at the starting gate. Viagra helped - for a while but even an 'energized' slug just isn't much good for doing things fast!

Things were a bit confusing for a while, what with Andrea's slug named Fuzzy, Fuzzy's Dog a slug and Dusty cussing with Glee as she walked the dog ( or was it the slug?)

Poor Jayj spent the evening checking the address on the front of Callahans. Yep, She was in the right place.... for it didn't take her long before she wandered out and came back with a brown paper bag... And a Cross-breed slug named Gob!

Lordy, what a slug! GOB was a cross with a centipede. Poor slug - Do you know how hard it would be to get your legs working in the same direction with all that slime?

Scooby and LindaO11 (Welcome to callahans Linda!) worked as a team to get *Lightning Bolt* ready for the race. Grey-Falcon (Welcome Falcon !) put his money on Lightning Bolt since Gomer was still stiff and couldn't move and GOB was working himself to death trying to stand on his legs....

The current standing for the Callahans Faster Slug Race are as follows:

Fuzzy (Andrea's) was accidently sit on by Fuzzy.
Gomer is stiff
Lightning Bolt is at the starting line (but Linda is still blowing the slug)
Gob is off taking a nap...

This has been your action news Reporter coming to you live (or to keep the pace with the slugfest) from Callahan's Saloon... Stay tuned for future updates... Eventually..:)

And a note from Kate about her ongoing remodeling effort:

... LOL... all help is welcome...we made a really good start last night. [April 29th] Andrea, Fuzzy and Jim have a great imagination... so far we have handprints and footprints (and even EYEBROW prints!!-Don't ask !!)...

we have a friendship ring made with ALL the colours of the rainbow... there's a green shamrock in the centre.. and little stars all around.. each star represents Callahan's patrons... past and present..

Andrea painted some music notes by the jukebox.. and Jay was a really big help in deciding our colour schemes... She did NOT want us painting Helga though... for some strange reason! Therm helped us get some of the stars up on the ceiling.. and we painted them with fluorescent paint! It is starting to look great... oh and fuzzy is trying to impersonate Michelangelo... let's hope he doesn't hurt himself up there on that scaffold!

Ron... I think we should add something distinctively Canadian to this mix...what do you think?

Joke of The Month

The General went out to find that none of his G.I.s were there. One finally ran up, panting heavily. "Sorry, sir! I can explain, you see I had a date and it ran a little late. I ran to the bus but missed it, I hailed a cab but it broke down. I found a farm, bought a horse but it dropped dead, ran 10 miles, and now I'm here."

The General was very skeptical about this explanation but at least he was here so he let the G.I. go. Moments later, eight more G.I.s came up to the General panting, he asked them why they were late.

"Sorry, sir! I had a date and it ran a little late, I ran to the bus but missed it, I hailed a cab but it broke down. I found a farm, bought a horse but it dropped dead, ran 10 miles, and now I'm here."

The General eyed them, feeling very skeptical but since he let the first guy go, he let them go, too. A ninth G.I. jogged up to the General, panting heavily.

"Sorry, sir! I had a date and it ran a little late, I ran to the bus but missed it, I hailed a cab but..."

"Let me guess," the General interrupted, "it broke down."

"No," said the G.I., "there were so many dead horses in the road, it took forever to get around them."

Pun of the Month

The famous Olympic skier Picabo (pronounced Peek-a-boo) Street is not just an athlete, she is also a nurse. She currently works at the Intensive Care Unit of a large metropolitan hospital.

She is not permitted to answer the telephone, however, as it caused simply too much confusion when she would answer the phone and say,

"Picabo, ICU. "

Poem of the Month -
"Thoughts From An Abused Child"

The pain is growing to levels of know
Some times it grows to hate
Hate for life, hate for love
Perhaps if I do not love then I will not feel pain.

This pain is coming from loving too much
This pain is coming from her hating touch
This pain is coming from her hating words.

Some times I just want to be heard
Heard by her and heard by the world
Tell her that she hurts me so much
That I just want to curl up into a ball and hide.

Hide from her, hide from the world but most of all hide from the pain.
The pain grows inside my body like a cancer
The pain grows until it is overflowing.

How do I get this pain out of my heart out of my mind and out of my soul?
Can I bring it to the surface by cuts and scrapes and bruises?
Will hurting others take the pain out of me?
Will ending my life stop the pain?
No, it will just transfer the pain,
Causing someone else to start off where I began
The same cycle will start over again causing someone else the same end
To stop the cycle I must learn to live with the pain and live with the hurt.

Perhaps some day the pain wont be so great
Perhaps some day I can love again
If only it was not so difficult to love and trust again.
