Opening Toast

To all Callahanians -
You have made this more than a forum -
You have made this home.

*** Smash! ***

- Carol (LADYLAUGHING) in response to Jim Crowley's post about the death of Bhanti and Bright. December 4, 2002

Manager's Corner

Hi all..

Our opening toast reminds us of how close people can become in an online community. We are family here.

And so we were very saddened when we learned this month of the separate deaths of three family members, Bright, Bhanti, and Mary. We had heard that Mary and Bhanti were gravely ill but it is still difficult to accept this harsh reality.

And few knew anything of Bright's illness. Many of us met and were bewitched by her when she hosted our Gathering 2000 in St. Louis. We will cherish the photo "Bright in her Cups" all the more now.

Bright, Bhanti and Mary each made unique contributions to Callahans over the years and each will be missed.

On a happier note, Sue (SUEMO) has accepted the responsibility of becoming our newset message board 'tender. Please be sure to thank her when you see her..:)

Oh - and Silky popped her head in this month.. Maybe someday our Prodigal Daughter will return..:)

We look forward to 2003 with great anticipation. This year will mark our tenth anniversary on Delphi and we plan to party a bit. Our theme for the year will be "Callahans Crosstime Saloon" and our theme for January is "Shared Pain and Joy."

We plan to have many special conferences and lots of fun celebrating on the board. I plan to revamp the website a bit, too. I hope you all join us in the fun..:)

Conference News

Carol announced this month that JayJ will host a weekly conference named "Mellow Monday" on Monday nights. Way to go, JayJ - and thanks!

In other conference news, BooBooBob hosted a conference on "Gay Life" on December 8th. Thank you, Bob!

Here is his report on the event:

In response to what I felt was a large amount of anti-gay prejudice displayed within Delphi forums, and having commented on it, I was asked by Carol to host a conference in which questions about homosexuality, the myths surrounding it, the facts behind it, and its place in society were answered.

It was a LARGE, well attended chat.  WOW.  We had KALLISTI, 7UPS, THERMOPOLIS, Myself, Lou (ROSE8364), Carol (LADYLAUGHING), KAPTNKATE, MOONWEFT, GWENHWYVAR, UNCLESCOOBY, Bill (FURRYONE), DAVE_HAUSE, bits, and a whole slew of others visiting from other forums, a few of which have become Cal's regulars.

We discussed the theoretical causes of homosexuality, its place in nature and society, what GLBT stands for (Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, and Transgender, BTW), reiterated the fact that pedophilia is NOT related to homosexuality, and should not be seen in the same context, whether or not "gay jokes" are appropriate, and whether or not homosexuality is to be considered an illness (to which most of us replied in the resoundingly negative.)

Most of all, I think we came to an understanding. An understanding that gay people really are just like everyone else, and that love is still love, no matter what form it takes.

Oddly enough, the chat went very well. It was a little bumpy, because we attempted to run it more like a panel discussion, which is hard to coordinate but we muddled through and got everyone's questions answered.

If you missed the chat, you can read the transcript for yourself. A warning, though. it READS like a chat. :0-)

Message Board News

David asked for some kind thoughts as he went Under The Knife Again. We report happily that he endured the operation well and continues to recover nicely.

Joke of The Month

Lost My Underwear - A Poem

yes it's true
I really fear
I've gone and lost my underwear
It's not a joke
It's really true
I've gone and lost my hamster too

I looked high
and I looked low
where I've lost them
I just don't know

My Mom's afraid to walk around
because my hamster's not been found
and ever since it got away
My Mom's been cautious every day

Then I saw under the chair
my hamster in my underwear!

Poem of the Month - "Advice to Young Wives"

A Recitation.

Ahem!
Never shout at your spouse,
Even when he's a louse.
Always gentle words espouse,
Be gentle as a timid mouse,

UNLESS,
There's a fire in your house,
Then with loud words you may arouse
AND SCREAM,
"Get out of here you big doofus!!!!!!"
BUT,
{say it LOVINGLY.}

[Bows and smiles and walks off the stage ]

-Maj (XMAJXX) December 12, 2002

Closing Quote
