Opening Toast

... remember the toast earlier today? I think I should do it here, for all the gals to see, don't you? So:

"Here's to good women
May we know them
May we be them
May we raise them"

*** Smash! ***

- Cat (CATHERINESM) October 17, 2002

Manager's Corner

Hi all..

Operation Butterball will begin on November 15th. We'll announce the name of the coordinator in a few days but in the meantime, please prepare for Callahans' annual charity drive. Our goal is for *you* to make a donation to a local charity over and above what you might have already been planning..

Donations can be in the form of cash, food, time, etc. but whatever you donate should be *more* than you were already planning to give.. We would very much like for Callahans to make a difference..:)

Lou

Conference News

From bits:

Robin Hood was the topic of a special conference hosted by JayJ and Kaptain Kate, the word from this conference is that Sir Alan A' Dale was a hit with the ladies, which left poor Robin (or was that Lou) nursing his ego.

Message Board News

From bits:

Books, Movies, & Music Folder

The discussion was lively when folks responded to The worst movie started by Tristan (ANIMALIBERTY.) KaptainKate's (KAPTNKATE) observation "LOL...to each their own. :)" indicates just how diverse the opinions were!

October 2002 Theme: European Cultures

The denizens of Callahan's Saloon discussed everything from living in the lowlands of the Netherlands to Parisian Pickpockets, to the European Union, to Chris Columbus during October 2002 European Cultures Month.

The What Would Freud Say thread was taken over by rampant punning perpetrated by Walt (WWW3), Chad aka kestrel (SHEAR2), Mark (QUIRC), Cortland (KA5S), Stu (CRANSTON65), GreyLensman, Arnie H (WIZOPARNIE), Lou (ROSE8364), Neon (NEONURD60), PeterDesmond (TAX_HOMBRE), and Chibi-Tatsu (SSUNHAWK).

Chris (EMETTMAN) posted that some of the names listed in the Top 10 'Great Britons' Poll worried him and he vowed to vote as often as he could. Elgar (the British composer) was on the list, Tim (BRUNOTIM), cane (caneguru), Maj (XMAJXX), Pyewacket, and Bits (LBT1) discussed their admiration of his work as well as the pain of playing Pomp and Circumstance over and over.. meanwhile Kethryn (WULFKUB), Cortland (KA5S), Mauser (GREYMAUS1), Bee (LADYGEEZA), and Tim noted how Shakespeare is taught in schools.

The Chocolate from Europe thread had many of us drooling over our keyboards. The Beer, Wine, & Spirits Tour of Europe thread enticed Els(MISSELSA), MICKY BLUE EYES (MICKOTINE), VEYO, ALOUZON, Tim, Mitzi, Maj, Julie, and Cortland to post about their favorite brews.

Joke of The Month

A little old woman called Mount Sinai Hospital. She said, "Mount Sinai Hospital? Hello. Darling, I'd like to talk with the person who gives the information about the patients. But I don't want to know if the patient is better or doing like expected, or worse, I want all the information from top to bottom, from A to Z."

The voice on the other end of the line said, "Would you hold the line, please, that's a very unusual request?"

Then a very authoritative voice came on and said, "Are you the lady who is calling about one of the patients?"

She said, "Yes, darling! I'd like to know the information about Sarah Finkel, in room 302."

He said, "Finkel. Finkel. Let me see. Feinberg, Farber - Finkel. Oh yes, Mrs. Finkel is doing very well. In fact, she's had two full meals, her doctor says if she continues improving as she is, he is going to send her home Tuesday at twelve o'clock."

The woman said, "Thank God! That's wonderful! She's going home at twelve o'clock! I'm so happy to hear that. That's wonderful news."

The guy on the other end said, "From your enthusiasm, I take it you must be one of the close family?"

She said, "What close family? I'm Sarah Finkel! My doctor don't tell me nothing!"

Poem of the Month - " "

Now if you could hear all that the neighbors say,
I'm sure that it would gall you.
But if you could be what they want you to be,
Then what in the hell would they call you?

The Uncle Ed I remember, but I was just a kid back then.

How can we judge our fellow man,
How can we tell where he has been.
Maybe he did not see as you have seen,
Maybe he did not dream as you have dreamed.

Maybe his heart was kind and true,
Doing as he felt that he should do.
Maybe his heart has been broken too,
Longing for a word of love from you.

Maybe if we could have known his pain,
His longing for your friendship,
As a flower longs for rain.

Just some little kindness, like shaking his hand.
Or calling him "neighbor."
Letting him know you're his friend.

He may have done evil,
but he has also done good.
He is only a boy, just a babe in the wood.

So be sure you know him, before you condemn,
You may find that you love him,
And proud to call him a friend.

- Quirc('s Uncle Ed) October 15, 2002

Closing Quote

" No pessimist ever discovered the secret of the stars, or sailed to an uncharted land, or opened a new doorway for the human spirit."

– Helen Keller
With thanks to bits (LBT1) and Sue (SUEMO)
