Opening Toast

Cane and Don, with patience rare,
We, Huns invading, welcomed there;
Don and Cane, dazed, now rest:
We toast; they are the very best!

- Cortland, Toasting the Hostess
and Host of Gathering 2002

Manager's Corner

Hi all..

Whew! Gathering 2002 has come and gone.. and as expected, we had fun in Seattle! Cane was a wonderful hostess and her husband Don quite the creative entertainer.

Can you say "Peanut Paddle" and "Peanut Dart"?

It was great to meet old and new friends and to get to know each other as we toured and traveled the Seattle area. I had a wonderful time..:)

Take a moment or two and check out some of the Gathering 2002 photos taken.

Callahans on DelphiForums is 9 years old this month! I've been here for 8 of those years and still love the place. I hope we'll all celebrate out 10th Anniversary together..:)

See you there..:)

Lou

Website News

Message Board News

Gathering 2002 threads - from bits:

Upon a Wednesday clear,
Sue and Tim met friends most dear:
With demon horns upon their heads,
They brought us to our hotel beds.

By Tim - in the The Following is Not True thread.

Who threw a blast, which we'll long tell;
Who showed us how to do it well;
Who fed us till we'd eat no more;
Who foolish, opened up their door;
Who found the lost, and lost the found;
Who brought us, all, to underground;
Who earned full praise for all we got;
Though they might silent wish us shot.

Cane and Don, with patience rare,
We, Huns invading, welcomed there;
Don and Cane, dazed, now rest:
We toast; they are the very best!

*** SMASH ****

Cortland - in the Cane and Don thread..:)

The Book O’Rumors has some new additions, thanks to Peter and Mike Irish, in Greetings and Rumors from the Gathering.

Also see, Additions to the books o’rumors

Jim (CROWLEY47) tells of Lou and crew being lost in Seattle, in The Return. and the Greylensman (Greylensman2) shared the words from the song he performed at the Seattle Gathering, ‘The Grey Bunny Bop’.

Ron (Southron2) asked the question, IHOP, American Icon or Urban Legend? See comments from Ron and other Gatherers about their search for the elusive IHOP and Kris’ (Traumamama) probing experience at SeaTac airport. Ron and Helen’sThe long road home, Carol's (LADYLAUGHING) Bob’s Lantern, our tradition of remembering those who are not with us and Bob Hall’s (WEREDRAGON) response, voices from afar also recalled special events..:)

And Grey's Gathering Pics Posted!!! was a hit as was Bits’ Seattle Gathering Photos!

Melting Pot threads - also from bits:

Close to Home Melting Pots included observations from several denizens about the cultures and ethnic groups in their neighborhoods. CatLaughing related how the houses in her neighborhood may look the same, but the folks who live in those houses are diverse, "All of our houses look alike - right down to the identical tree centered in each postage stamp front lawn. It's the kind of neighborhood I used to make fun of, when I lived in more interesting (and expensive) places. I guess we must be the 'fondue' aspect of the melting pot - where everyone spends so much time together, we actually have to think to remember our differences..."

When I was Growing Up in America by Claimsman explores the good and the not so good..

Elizabeth Kate (ELIZABETHKAT) provided a link to an IQ test given to immigrants in 1917 from a site developed by a friend of hers, who is a teacher. "It teaches about the false science of Eugenics, and focuses on how Eugenics affected U.S. immigration policies in the early 1900's. If failing the IQ test intrigues you, you might find the Power Point presentation at the same site a good place to start researching the Eugenics movement in the U.S." So, Are you smart enough to immigrate?

In the Ellis Island-Melting Pot at Full Boil thread we find that Bits (LBT1), Tim (BRUNOTIM), Sandy (MISSS), and Stu Lieber (Cranston65) all had ancestors who immigrated to America through Ellis Island.

Carol (LADYLAUGHING) tells us about her brother’s experiences in the Army wonders if minorities are treated differently than white male soldiers in Military Melting Pot.

There was also a discussion on What is ‘The American Dream’?

Carol (LADYLAUGHING) looked at the directions that came with a Huffy bike and started a discussion about languages in Language Melting Pot.

For those who remember the cartoon series ‘School House Rock’ you can take a trip down memory lane with several other denizens in the Red, White, and Blue Stew thread.

And an overview - from bits..:)

General Discussion Catfantastic provided a public service announcement,, detailing which articles to send for recycling and which ones not to send..:) "It DOES NOT currently have the facilities to process the following materials: Foam rubber, Disassembled furniture, Shoes, Chicken bones, Brooms, CDs, Deflated footballs, pants, Mud." However, we thank you for, and urge you to continue recycling: Bestsellers, Unopened cases of bottled water, Functional personal computers, Video games, Money, Cadbury Creme Eggs, Designer backpacks, CD players, Unopened jars of Thai stir-fry sauce--especially the extra spicy; Latif really likes the extra spicy."

Serenity Sue (Suemo) posted this quote, which began a discussion about spirits. "If God forbade drinking, would He have made wine so good?" ~~ Cardinal Richelieu. Cortland responded with his customary jest, "And what would he say with regard to _eating_?" The conversation continued on it’s merry way with promises to create a new type of margarita!

This month’s most active poll came from Silentlector, When You Put on Your Jeans do You.. The denizens of Callahan’s were very revealing about their jeans..

Galaxy, Geeks, & Gadgets

Peter (Tax Hombre) sparked a lively discussion with his tale about his friend Sandy’s hair raising experience in Near-miss by lightning and Cstar distracted several patrons in History Wired.

noigileR & seussI ,scitiloP

Cortland begins a discussion about the California Court decision that called the Pledge of Allegiance unconstitutional in Lemon Pledge. Lady Kethryverris (WULFKUB) ponders the consequences of skipping commercials in Guess I’m a Thief Now and Bob Hall stated " our money isn't BACKED by anything but faith!" which sparked a lively discussion in In God We Trust.

Serenity Sue (Suemo) posted this quote from John Adams: "The highest glory of the American Revolution was this, it connected in one indissoluble bond, the principles of civil government with the principles of Christianity." to start off the A Christian Nation? thread. She went on to say: "What interested me about this quote is that it was quoted along with a couple similar quotes from our 'founding' fathers in a letter to the editor in our local paper. The 'under God' debate is still going on. This guy was using these quotes to show the nation was indeed formed ‘under God’.I don't know if it is just because I was always lead to believe in both secular and non-secular worlds that we were a country founded on Godly belief an principles that I still have trouble divorcing God from Nation. Deep down inside I believe we'd do well to have God on our side." The thread is now at 57 messages and going strong.

Concernss about the US response to the attacks September 11, 2001 continue as evidenced in Peter’s (TAX_HOMBRE) thread homeland security is getting scary.

Books, Movies, & Music

Claimsman suggested some books To Be Found In Any Good Library. Several other denizens contributed to the list.. we’re going to need lots of book shelves!

Pun of the Month

There was once a couple, Mr. and Mrs. Tate, and it was their life's dream to have a compass company. They finally saved enough money and started the Tate's Compass Company. Luck was with them, for the first contract they acquired was to manufacture 750,000 compasses for the Boy Scouts.

They worked feverishly day and night to meet their deadline, and finished just before the Boy Scout Jamboree was to begin. On the day of the Boy Scout Wilderness hike, each Boy Scout was given a Tate's Compass to help them find their way. Unfortunately, it was discovered a little too late that every single compass was made with the colored point of the needle facing the wrong way, so when one was facing North, the needle pointed to the South.

Needless to say, all of the Boy Scouts got lost and it was the biggest fiasco known in Boy Scout history. The Tate's compass company went out of business, but from this experience came the familiar adage, "He who has a Tate's is lost."

Poem of the Month - "Gathering 2002"

All year long,
Bored, we waited
Came the time anticipated.
Dates were set, for our long trip;
Eagerly, away we slipped
For Seattle, the current goal,
Gathered with others of like soul.
How did we celebrate!

It was a blast,
Just as elsewhere, in years past.
Kind hosts, Cane and Don, their home
Left open, for us to roam.
More than they bargained for, for sure,
Now emptied of our noisy tour.

Our plans towards next years gathering are laid.
People next year will go who this year stayed
Quiet at home, and envied our
Revels and parties late of hour.
Shall we improve on what we’ve done,
Through Gather plans just now begun?

Until we’ve started, who can tell?
Visions and plans are but the shell
We write, and notes to be,
Xylophones we’ve not yet struck,
Yesterday's fictions, set free,
Zero's of a function of luck.

- Cortland July 11, 2002

Closing Quote

"Never tell a young person that anything cannot be done. God may have been waiting centuries for someone ignorant enough of the impossible to do that very thing."

- John Andrew Holmes
