Opening Toast

"To friendship - the only cement that will ever hold the world together."

*** Smash ***

- from a Woodrow Wilson quote

Manager's Corner

Hi all..

Operation Butterball has begun! Sandra and Brigitte are co-sponsors this year of Callahans' annual charity drive. Our goal is for *you* to make a donation to a local charity over and above what you might have already been planning..

You'll be hearing more from Sandra and Brigitte on our board. Please help someone in your community have a happier holiday season this year.

The world is still reeling from the September 11th attacks and their aftermath. Callahans is no exception. Our board, as you'll see from the links below, has been busy with discussions of the military action in Afghanistan, the Taliban, and legislation and security issues in the United States.

Understandably, many people are concerned by the potential erosion of freedoms that will come with enhanced security - not to mention the potential abuses of power. I hope the discussions lead us all to greater understanding.

And we welcomed Shane as our newest Conference a tender in October. Shane has been in and out of Callahans for many years but recently has stayed around long enough to become a citizen..:) Please thank Shane for taking on the responsibility of helping to keep our chat rooms safe and welcoming for all..

Another of the denizens of Callahan's Saloon got married this year. Zad (FRIDAYJONES) was married two days after her birthday, on October 27, 2001. Anyone who was in chat with Zad in the last month or so, knows how excited she was getting about it. Here are some photos.

Conference News

From Brigitte:

Oktoberfest Street Party

Good beer, good food (watch out cholesterol levels LOL), not so good Oompah music and most importantly good company!

I don't know about the rest of you, but I had a wonderful time... even got to speak some German to Cortland, Shane and Carol (thanks to a German friend she had with her.)

Bill was cooking up the Bratwurst, while others brought more yummy treats to eat that I grew up on... including an incredible apple strudel... Mmmmmmmm.

Shane dazzled us in his lederhosen. ... all the while trying to get one of us girls to put on a drindel style dress and dance with him. Maybe we should have one of these every month <g>

Auf Wiedersehen for now all!

Carol:

And speaking of Shane, there is a new apron hanging on hook behind the bar! In mid October after a day of cleaning and waxing the bar, I heard a noise coming from the basement and lo and behold Shane came through donning the ‘tenders apron. After a few days of poking, prodding and testing.. Shane was found to truly be a tender ‘tender.

Shane can be found most nights in chat. He is often spotted behind the bar serving some of the best Benedictions in cyber space. Congratulation Shane !

Message Board News

From Cstar:

Much of our lives in the last two months has been spent trying to understand, and come to grips with the events of September 11, 2001. Learning, understanding, and talking things out have been the touchstone for many of us here in Callahans. We learn in Tracing the Terrorists' Steps, and that destroyed Afghan village and MultiCulturism; discuss our futures in Heimatsekuritat (Homeland Security) and President's speech 9/20/01.

I don't think I've ever seen the noigileR & seussI ,scitiloP folder so busy. I almost wish it weren't.

Joke of The Month

She looked out and saw her husband on the porch, head in hands, sobbing. She went to him and asked "What's wrong honey?"

"Remember," he said, "when I was 19 and you were 16 and pregnant? Your father came to me with a shotgun and said I could marry you or go to prison for 20 years."

"I remember...but why are you crying?"

"I would have gotten out today."

Closing Quote

"Human beings, who are almost unique in having the ability to learn from the experience of others, are also remarkable for their apparent disinclination to do so."

- Douglas Adams
