Callahan's December 2000 Bar Rag!"To Callahan's Warmth

"To All Those Who Never Found Hope!" ***************SMASH***************** -- LADY_DANCER Fire up the lantern again Hi all.. Operation Butterball continues.. but we appear to be off the pace a bit from last year's effort. Won't you help your local food bank, or any local charity of your choice with more... They certainly need your help in trying to bring some joy (or maybe simply dinner) to those in need this holiday season. As Vickie as often said, "Don't give till it hurts, give till it helps!"
And the beat goes on...! Walt gave us a report on his first Saturday conference! What a great time. Saturday, Nov. 18th saw Walt's move to the Saturday Matinee at Callahan's. This premier Saturday session was enlivened by the presence of the Irish Twins - Patti (Mist) and Mike Irish - and of two patrons from Oz - Vickie (Midustouch) and Robert (Jedi Goodnight). Of course, it was Sunday afternoon for Vickie and Rob. The redheads were also present in the form of Vickie, Cstar, and SuzyQ. Fortunately the Delphi Demons kept their distance. As many as 22 patrons were in the bar during the evening. Rona6 ordered a beaujolais nouveau - the brand new vintage of beaujolais from France. Fortunately, Cal's had just received a case earlier that day. We learned the multi-talented Antinomy not only plays the cello, but also plays Irish fiddle music on the cello. The hot tub got filled with wine - half the tub white wine and half red wine. No one is sure how it works, but it's just like filling it with half hot water and half cold. Newcomers included JNNBNN, who learned how to fly; Rainbow8 , who had a football question to which Walt actually knew the answer; and Country Girl. Other activities included foot rubs, tickling the bartender (and posting of a "No Tickling the 'Tender" sign), zapping the sliding monkey, craps, and kisses for Lou and Cstar. Silky shared Sunday brunch with us. Sounds like the place to go if you ask me. Sunday Brunch chat opened at 11 am. The first visitor in the door was Carol . During the day, Lou, Tamilyn, Hombre Verde, Joe G, a new visitor Amy , Sandra and MA among others arrived and stayed to chat for longer or shorter times, depending on the time they had available. The conversation ranged from.... Carol feeling silly (hmm...I don’t recall a patron by that name...must be a pet nickname!)...to laundry. We discovered that JP has a backyard on his boat...complete with orange and grapefruit trees and a forest habitat on the stern. Several of the patrons seem to have dinghies in their backyards...though I don’t believe that all of them were talking about boat type dinghies.... The pros and cons of shopping online were discussed, with most people seeming to be in favor of it, providing one can trust the security of the "shop" in question. No one had any horror stories to share and most seemed to think that it was as easy as shopping by catalog...without finding someplace to store that bound pile of paper. JP (again!) kept trying to flash Silky, but broke his flasher! This caused an awful lot of uproar, while everyone helped him try to fix it. The good news is, that JP managed to fix his flasher and merrily began flashing everyone again.
We discovered that Walt and Sancho are the
ones with all the mistletoe...Sancho almost buried poor
Walt in it when they prepared to leave... Helen shared with us a Sunday evening Chat. I promise a good
time was had by all.
In Chat one Sunday, was quite a rousing evening, I'll tell you that. Scooping
out sundaes for the crowd and watching the old and newcomers come in the door. I
was very happy to see some old timers Patti and Ace
walk in the door. Patti treated us with a wine hot tub and enough
gold coins to cover the tab for the night. Thanks Patti. We had
a couple of new comers who joined into the spirit jovially, PrettyDark
and Chantel310, and Dbruh, a merry meet girls.
A number of topics were discussed, but we couldn't quite keep the hot topics of
Chad's and Football out of our midst. We cheered on with glee
when PrettyDark announced her birthday and Smashed glasses to a
number of toasts. One of which, given by Ace I'd like to share.
"May all the people who love life; love all the people who are life"

Enjoying the revelry with my old, new and close friends, a food fight broke out in
the crowd (well, it's Cal's isn't it) Until a horse drawn Stage Coach apparated
in the bar and carried Lou and Carol out of sight.
What an exit <g>..
JP shared with us the new conference schedule. Thanks
JP, now no one has an excuse to miss a conference.
Starting out on Sunday Helen (Mrs.South) has taken over the
Sunday night chat.
Brigitte is still tending the chat for Monday night and of
course Tuesday is still Punday Night!
Wednesday's chat is now hosted by Pegasus and of course alternate Thursdays
is poetry night with Peter Desmond. the other Thursday is presently being
tended by other tenders on a rotating basis
Friday night is the night for craziness with Carol (Ladylaughing) and Walt
has moves to the Saturday night chat, so if you are looking for your favorite
tender you now know where to find them.
Coming up in December is the decorating of the bar, and of course new years
eve and the bringing in of a new millennium.
For myself I will be running between chats and filling in occasionally and
so will Cstar. You never know where we might pop up.
Looking forward for another fun and interesting month ahead
Join us in our conferences! We have saved you a seat, and your favorite
beverage is waiting.
If you had a great time in one of our conferences,
tell us about it!
We want to hear your thoughts!
Starting off message board news, WEREDRAGON had this to
share from the Politics and Religion folder:
So!
She would ^snif^ with a disdain belonging to only the very bluest of blood
before she said it, too. (Then she would refill her sherry, light a fresh
cigarette, despite the one or two already burning, and lean one elbow on
the fine linen tablecloth, grinning around at us with a devilish insouciance,
and say "Well? What should we talk about? The affair the mayor's boy is
having with the minister's wife, or the sorry state of Bethlehem Steel?")
So, this is why I’m not surprised to find myself in that folder a lot, and
I’m in good company.
If you, too, wish to visit where angels fear to tread...
We’ve got:
Where Claimsman has a paternity question for us all, it’s been
subject to honest-to-CStar
"thread drift", but it remains within at least ONE subject parameter.
And:
Where Bits (I know you don’t capitalize it, but I’m gonna) wishes health
to
a man who deserves our good wishes.
Then there’s:
Where El Hombre Verde finds another instance of
bureaucracy encountering language problems- speaking of which, that’s an
interesting thread title there, Hombre!
Here’s a good one:
KathyC started it ‘way back at the beginning of the
month, and it went strong all through! Not only that,
she’s bloody well right!
Our Very Own Cstar (may her throne of cloud be restful) brought
from afar this one for which
a few new verses could get writ, y’know.
We have some interesting and entertaining Canadian political material
(Thanks, Griddle!)
There’s some Knowledge to be had.
Oh, heck, people! I’m not caught up entirely with the board myself right
now- Go Explore! Post!
(Strong>Star? I’m not fired ‘cuz o’ that "not caught up" thingie, am I?)
Peter updated us on the latest happening in the Poetry folder.
Machinery seemed to be on the minds of many of our poets in November.
Colonist compared making poetry to popping popcorn.
Vickie told a tale about the installation of an air conditioner.
And Mal (Murray) examined different metaphors for the slow working of the
mind.
The Demons in the Delphi machines managed to scuttle our November 9th
poetry chat, but the chat on Thanksgiving night (November 23rd) went off
without a hitch and with plenty of turkeys to gorge on.
CSTAR always has something interesting for us. This month is no exception.
We're at three weeks and counting, and still not a presidential winner in
sight. The aftermath of this year's Presidential election seems to have
gotten far more press and conversation than the entire year of campaigning
before the fact. Our Politics and Religion folder has been busier than in a
long time. We had serious discussions about the voting and the constitution in
Get Out and Vote, Electoral College silly ones about tiny
pieces of punched out paper in Chad - Apologies to Kestrel.
Polls were fun to start this month, and got lots of participation. We
started with US Presidential Election - Cal's style (by the way, GWB
won, 13 votes to 11 for Al Gore, and 9 for Ralph Nader), continued with Will
Florida be able to certify their ballots, and Are you satisfied
with your county's ballot or voting machine?
Don't forget there were Canadian elections too - Griddlebone, Catfantastic,
Crystal, JenM12, Paul McCulloch, Helen, Pegasus, Cortland and Larry discussed
some of the issues confronting our Canadian members in Info for Canadian
Voters and The Canadian Election.
Robert (Jedi Goodknight) met some folks that wanted to talk about religion,
which he shared with us in Proselytising. His subsequent
examination of his personal beliefs transcended the Politics and Religion
folder, and became also a work of fiction and a conversation with a deity over
in Creative Writing, "After..." and parts I & II. A
fascinating dialog with himself, and the other folks in Callahan's.
Vickie and Sandra kicked off Operation Butterball in November, and
have been cheerleading us through all month. Each gift to your local charity,
food bank, shelter, etc., counts towards our giving total. As of November
29th, we stood at 286.4 gifts. We (actually, your local charities!) could
really use your help in reaching our goal of 1000 gifts. "To participate in
the drive we ask that people pledge a turkey or some other gift to their local
food bank, shelter, or other charitable organization. Points or "Gifts" are
awarded on the following scale: 1 turkey = 2 gifts, $5 = 1 gift, 4 canned
goods = 1 gift 3 dinner donations = 1 gift. Volunteering time also merits
gifts. You don't have to produce a receipt. You don't have to send us anything
except your intended pledge. " We have a long way to go to hit the 1000 gift
goal - won't you donate to your local charity today, and let us know how much
it was so we can add it to our total?
Ok, ladies.... wanna see a picture? Check out SirWill99's photo !
Not only gallant, but the countenance of a prince, as well. We've got some
pretty good looking guys around here, don't we? (grin)
Do you want to read a heart-wrenching essay? She's living in snowier climes
these days, and her "Gonna be needing some snow money" recounts her
scary trip to the airport for Thanksgiving with her folks down south. "I
don't think I make enough now to keep my car in the airport parking garage,
pay cab fare back and forth to work every day until April, *and* eat
regularly.". Poor Lizkat.... you can let go of the steering wheel now!
Have something you would like to say about our message board?
Drop me a line and let us know.
Staff
Birthday Greetings were heartily extended to:
A local Pastor joined a community Service Club, and
the members thought they would have some fun with him.
Beneath his name on his tag, they carefully printed,
"Hog Caller" as his occupation. Everyone made a big
fanfare as he was presented his badge.
The Pastor responded quietly, saying, "I'm usually
called 'The Shepherd of the Sheep,' but you know
your people better than I..."

Wow! Did you see all the conference tenders who submitted this month? I might have to keep that hot tub filled with wine, if I keep getting this type of response! Thank you all from the bottom of my little heart.
The snow has started to fall here. As with a lot of people, I felt the rush of winter calming... only to be faced with the depression that it makes travel less then pleasant. I wish you all safe travels as you visit family and friends! Remember, you don't have to go out in the cold to visit us here.
Have a warm and wonderful Holiday Season.
Until next month, walk in beauty.
We hope you find the Bar Rag entertaining and informative. We can always use
good pieces and writers here. If you have something you would like to submit,
or have a comment, good or bad, about the newsletter, or if you wish to be
added to or removed from our Bar Rag mailing list, simply send us a note.
