Opening Toast

This is not our usual toast; but Cstar shared the following:

In mid-August, David Brewer had a thankfully brief, but scary trip to the hospital emergency room. Hundreds of miles away, Elizabeth Kate could only wait for word, and hope for the best.

Everyone joined in, forming a circle of light, focusing in on what's become known as Bob's Lantern ('cause he suggested it!) We've left the lantern up in the window, lighting the way to hope for anyone that might need it. Here's the toast Lizkat proposed once she knew David was going to be OK:

"Here's to Bob's lantern. Like the sharing it signifies, may its light comfort us in our sorrows, soothe us in our hurts, inspire us in our merriment, and welcome us always home--whether for the first time or the final."

Manager's Corner

It's hard to look back on August when our Gathering in St. Louis looms as close as it does.. but..

Helen (MRSSOUTH) has joined the ranks of Callahan's tenders.. She and Ron have been part of our community for quite some time and their contributions to the magic of the place long recognized. She's moving as I write this and out of touch for a few days but please be sure to thank her for helping out with conferences..

And the Gathering... I arrive in St. Louis on Thursday the 14th at about 1:30 pm. Can't wait to meet the rest of you. Email me at the link below of you want to come, too - or if you need help at the airport.. or for last minute accommodations..:)

And the beat goes on...!
Lou

Website News

As mentioned above, we have 4 new poems about us on the board in July and two more collaborative poems to be added soon..

We've also added biographies and images of several new patrons to our Patron's Page.

Conference News

Brigitte did an awesome job reporting on "Costume Night"! I hope we continue to receive more of them.

Since August was biography month I thought it would be fun to have a costume party and have the patrons come dressed as historical figures. The party took place on August 28th and we had a great turn out. The costumes were great and we all had fun trying to guess who everyone came dressed as. We had an unveiling at midnight and many of us were surprised to see the people behind the masks. I would like to thank Moby, Carol, Cstar and Tami for all their help. I would also like to thank all the patrons that came and helped make the party a huge success.

Join us in our conferences! We have saved you a seat, and your favorite beverage is waiting.

If you had a great time in one of our conferences, tell us about it! We want to hear your thoughts!

Message Board News

Peter sent in this account of what has been happening:

August saw some interesting collaborations in the poetry folder. Mikel & Cortland played poetry ping-pong. Cortland and Vickie also wrote interactively.

Vickie won an honorable mention for Callahan's in the July InterBoard Poetry Contest.

Regular contributions from Django and Kay Lee also helped keep the message board poetry folder active. The poetry conferences went off without glitches.

David sent in this wonderful report.

Baptism started a fascinating series of stories from Robert, Jedi GoodKnight of Callahan's (IMAGINES). He also gave us a new twist on a movie alien with The Door. Ogre: After the Last War is his look at another writer's fiction, and how it extrapolates into Robert's imagination. However, despite MUCH patience and popcorn eating from a faithful audience, the promised continuation of "Slamdance" did not materialize. Sigh. Sometime soon, Robert?

Griddlebone asked for critiques on The Red Queen -- and announced her dissatisfaction with, and intent to rewrite, The Relic: Guardians of the Balance II. Awe... but I *liked* it! Bounty got Part Five and Parts Six and Seven with plenty of input and critiques from lots of folks... all of which is fun to read! And Part the I Lost Count fills in some gaps. <G>

Sylphidine posted her rough draft of Ghost In My Mirror, a haunting and, I gather, somewhat autobiographical tale.

Marla (Lazzari2) teased us with a short look at Expecting, and made me think a lot about motherhood in very few words... nice stuff!

Jo (Purr) shared an untitled story of family, which reminded me of happier days... sigh!

"More Great Lies From Callahan's" continued to gather stories of how folks first came here, from Pegasus, Bones, and Luthaen. Eep! And I haven't added them to my Hiawatha pastiche yet, either... soon!

And Jenkoplitz (a belated welcome to you!) shared a completely charming look at kid brothers in Balls of Kong.
Have something you would like to say about our message board? Drop me a line and let us know. Staff

Joke of The Month

Bones (BONES_10) share with us his encyclopedia of hugs. A little long to put it here, but well worth a look. Part 1, Part 2, and Part 3

-- Bones (BONES_10)

Poem of the Month - "Coward’s Hangover"

Somewhere between pride and slouch
where the marquee no longer says your name
certain people will turn their backs to your face
and the day seems to last an elephant’s maternity
the ebbing fame can leave a foul taste
wrapped around your tongue and head
down your stomach and out your perception
while you cringe in the dark against future light
and the pain of obscurity.

--Joe GryphonPoet (August 2000)

Closing Quote

"'Tis being and doing and having that make
All the pleasures and pains of which mankind partake;
To be what God pleases,
To do a man's best,
And to have a good heart,
Is the way to be blest."

--LORD BYRON (George Gordon)
