Opening Toast

"to all our homes, all those places where you are loved, however many you're lucky enough to have. And to Callahan's a home for anyone who needs one"

***************SMASH*****************

-- Antinomy Toast

Manager's Corner

Hi all..

July was another banner month is Callahans. The May-June-July spate of Poetry About Callahans continues - and no one is quite sure what drives the phenomenon. Perhaps vacation time brings out the poet in us all?

July also saw the naming of two more tenders - Pegasus and the 'bits.' Pegasus has become a conference tender and gives us later nighttime (eastern time) coverage. The 'bits' is a message board tender adding to almost every thread with insightful commentary. Both women bring a special brand of magic to Callahans and both deserve our gratitude for helping us maintain the magic here!

The St. Louis Gathering is but 6 weeks away. We have about 30 people signed up to attend and some of us are starting to get nervous about it..:) We'll all be having dinner at Duff's Irish Pub and many other optional events are available. There are still a few beds available at the Sheraton so write me at the link below if you want to join the fun.

And the beat goes on...!
Lou

Website News

Message Board News

This in from CStar

The long-awaited Callahan's Key was released this month. If you haven't picked up a copy yet, or haven't been able to find one, you might want to visit our bookstore to place your order. Some bookstores are bringing it in, some are not. "The universe is in desperate peril.... And only one man can stop the devastation this unholy weapon will wreak. Unfortunately, he's not available. So the job falls instead to bar owner Jake Stonebender...." I hope someone will write a review and send it to Lou for inclusion on our Reviews page. I'm about two thirds of the way through, and so far, the only thing I have difficulty believing, is the talking baby.... oh - and the.... nope! Nemmind... YOU go read it!

Our poetry section doesn't only contain poems, literary sites, and references, sometimes discussions take on a life of their own. Peter had posted a few links in the African American Literary Websites thread, which quickly evolved into a discussion David took over to Politics, Mosaic/Melting Pot. I hadn't realized how different those two concepts of blended societies were, until I started reading Peter, David, Cortland, Lou, Bacchus, Kirwand, and Roberta discussing assimilation, preservation, co-existence, and affirmative action.

We're also discussing Historical Apologies, and whether governments should be responsible for the actions of their predecessors in past. Another discussion that began in a poetry thread, Cortland (KA5S), Alton (NOTLAUGH), Vickie (MIDUSTOUCH), Grayone (GRAYONE1), Pegasus (our newest tender!), Catfantastic, Dancingbare and others have all contributed their thoughts about reparation, remuneration, and reconciliation in all parts of the world.

It's no surprise that we talk frequently about telepathy around here. After all, the gang at Callahan's Place saved the world several times over with it. Tut (TUT_RA), Pegasus, Gwen (PUNSTERGAL), Plexa, "the bits " (LBT1), Kris(TRAUMAMAMA), Mike (WAXLYRICS) and the others have given it some thought..... oops.... I mean, they're discussing it now, in Thoughts on Telepathy.

Can an Atlantic whale travel across prairies, plains, mountains and deserts, and find true happiness in the waters of the Pacific Northwest? Yes! Travel with Left Coast Moby on his adventures crisscrossing the country in search of.... something different!

What's the true secret to eating barbecued food properly? Jo/Purr (NOONE13) found out in Secrets of the Universe that it's not how you eat it that's important, it's really more... how you share it. Are these Americans barbecue experts all leading a poor Dutch girl astray?

Hugs can be comforting, serious, or silly. Newcomer bones (BONES_10) is exploring the silly side, by showing how hugs might be written by different types of computer users. Do you have a {*{~{*hug*}~}*} to share?

Our (un)official quarterly testing began in July, so we could all find out who we really are! Your Place in the Kingdom was one test. Are you a benevolent ruler, or a knight in shining armor? What is your Secret Glam name ? Who's Nova Lushtwist? Does she know Typhoon Dandypowder? Did Heisler Ellicott know her before Bandicoot Bobo Tang did? Will Poopsie Hamsterbrain continue to host chats? Does he go for women who were Russian hamsters in their past lives, or Poohs and Tiggers ? Are you confused yet? :)

Peter submitted this information.

July was a good months for the poets o' Callahan's. On the InterBoard Poetry Competition, Chad (KESTREL) won second prize and Silvia Antonia (SBRANDONPERE) got an honorable mention. The two Poetry Nights were poem-packed and unplagued by Delphi demons. The message board flourished with a series of poems about dancing and about summer. A collective double sonnet on the theme of travel, initiated by HENDO, successfully concluded.

Collective and interactive poems are part of the poetry landscape at Callahan's. Take for example Mikel's The Wooing of Thisbe, based on the legend found in Shakespeare and Ovid. The poem prompted much discussion and this reply by Vickie, The Veil.

Joke of The Month

A big-time negotiator was out fishing one day when he caught a strange looking fish. He reeled the fish in, unhooked it, and threw it on the ground next to him. The fish started writhing in agony and, to the negotiator's surprise, said, "Please throw me back into the lake and I'll grant you three wishes."

"Any three wishes, huh?" the negotiator mused as visions of expensive fast cars and beautiful women paraded through his head.

"Fish," he finally exclaimed, "Give me five wishes and I'll throw you back."

"Sorry," the fish answered while struggling for breath, "only three wishes."

The negotiator's pride was at stake and after giving the matter some thought he announced, "What do you take me for? A sucker? I'll settle for four wishes."

"Only three," the fish murmured weakly.

Fuming, the man debated the pros and cons of accepting the three wishes or continuing to bargain for that one extra wish. Finally, the negotiator decided it wasn't worth looking a gift fish in the mouth and said, "All right fish, you win, three wishes."

Unfortunately, the fish was dead.

Poem of the Month - "The Fisherman"

Photograph found in a book,
faded, dark and gray.
A picture of my father
taken on a day in May.

Thick black curly hair, brushed
back from his face.
Laughing eyes of Irish blue,
reflecting style, and grace.

Leaning on a wooden boat,
stringer in his hand,
Fishing in the trout stream,
called the Meadowland.

His absolute love of living,
shows forth very clear.
Doubt or apprehension
not apparent here.

Living in the moment,
unaware what time will bring.
Trusting all the rest of life
will be a day in spring.

--Kay Lee Kelly 07/17/00

Closing Quote

"In perfect honor, perfect truth, And gentleness to all mankind, You trod the golden paths of youth, Then left the world and youth behind. Ah, no! 'tis we who fade and fail - And you, from Time's slow torments free, Shall pass from strength to strength and scale The steeps of immortality."

--SIR JOHN BUCHAN
