Opening Toast

" Ladies and Genttlemen, I'd like to propose a toast. To the meaning of life, and all who strive to seek it, and in some way, make my life easier to live. I know you are here for me, and I am thankful. Also, to Callahan's and spider robinson for having the vision. "

Manager's Corner

Hi all..

This month we begin our 8th year on Delphi! I want to thank all of you who have found us, needed us, sustained us and made us laugh and cry. Words really cannot describe the gratitude I have to those who believe in sharing their lives in the framework of our spirited little cyber pub. <smoochies to all>

And - the saga continues..:) We have a block of 18 rooms at the Sheraton-West in St. Louis and I think all the rooms have been taken.

Don't despair - call 1-314-291-6800 and ask to be put on the waiting list for a room - and let me know you did. We will find rooms for *everyone* who treks to St.Louis in September to meet us!

We have two new tenders! Sandra (MISSS) and Carol (LADYLAUGHING) have agreed to take on the serious responsibilities of tendership..:) Please thank and congratulate them when you see them. And the beat goes on...!
Lou

Conference News

Join us in our conferences! We have saved you a seat, and your favorite beverage is waiting. Delphi's engineers have done some solid good work this month as our conferences almost always show up and our numbers are rising as a result. If you've had trouble finding us in the past, it's become a much easier now. Do try again!

If you had a great time in one of our conferences, tell us about it! We want to hear your thoughts!

Message Board News

This in from Vicki:

We had some interesting postings in General Discussion for the month of June. Our friend Moby (MOBYDIK) started his great adventure in Moby Goes West and showed us that his spirit is alive and well and moving to Oregon.

Cstar (CSTAR1) our own Goddess, showed how Left Overs can bring joy in the most unlikely places. It evoked the usual compassionate and enlightening response from our patrons.
On a somber note Hostel in Australia reported on the horrible, deliberately lit fire in a backpackers hostel, in Childers. Jo/Purrr (NOONE13) was looking for news of her friend Dani. [Subsequently found to be well and happy.]
Griddle (LGRIDDLEBONE) discovered she had an unwelcome visitor in Bee's Knees.
Gregory Hines had David (DGBREWER) name-dropping all over the place and trying to emulate his hero, by walking 6" above the ground.
We now know that LizKat (ELIZABETHKAT) likes to go for a run to keep fit. In Dear Ms Answerall she poses a question about one of the places she passes in her quest for fitness.
Our dear friend Allan (TUT RA) showed that it's possible to turn rage into healing, in Little Vent Big Celebration.
CATFANTASTIC shocked the neighbors, yet again, by announcing that she was waiting for The Elder Race to invade. In this ain't gonna help! The discussion that followed had patrons admitting they had some strange habits too!
Sue (SUEMO), had us running to a web site she posted, hoping to catch a glimpse of our Suemo with red hair. Instead we got "Superglue Sue" a rather stuck-up Tyrannosaurus Rex, in See Sue Here.
Mike (MICHAEL5) brought up the subject of Executions in the State of Texas and a lively discussion ensued and continued for most of the month.
Please Excuse the Mess had Cstar (CSTAR1) cheekily inquiring, what state our homes were in. It seems we really are, a messy lot!
Peter shared the following.

Poetry continues to be a popular area for posting messages, and June was no exception. The collective poem on tolerance, with Chad as its shepherd, has been progressing nicely:

Speaking of collaboration, Vickie and Django have been putting together lyrics and music for a song. When are we going to get to hear it?
Among the informational threads, the one on meter and form -- How is meter made? -- has grown to almost encyclopedic proportions.
Keep posting your poems, folks, even though Callahan's did not win or place in the May InterBoard Poetry Contest. The June nominations are strong, though.
In other news, two out of the last three Thursday poetry chats have been sabotaged by demons. Are we downhearted? No! And, on the positive side, Lou has revamped the page of Poems about Callahan's and added several new ones. Check it out..:)
Kestrel shared this with us.

The Political Activism folder was...er... active...this month:

A poll asking if the Confederate flag should be flown on public property produced a variety of responses and opinions, ranging from racism to state's rights to what offends to...er, yellow grits? The results so far: 54% yes, 46% no...and more than a few requests for a Maybe.

Terrapyn's thoughts on re-examining the Death Penalty raised some interesting questions...is it a punishment, a deterrent or revenge? Should the State have the power of life and death? Whichever side of the issue they are on, most folks seem to agree that the system is seriously flawed...and humans could use some improvement too.
Cstar gave us this report.

Political Activism isn't the only folder we get debates in. Over in Galaxies, Geeks, and Gadgets, Lou's been debating with all comers, it seems, over whether Microsoft is, or is not a monopoly; is, or is not an honest company that produces a quality product, or has engaged in unfair business practices over the years. I don't think anyone has really been convinced one way or the other, but it's interesting to see the varying opinions.

Does the Invisible Man Walk Through Invisible Walls? Allan (TUT_RA) asks. If "our system (the modulations and refractions of reflections creating reflections in the mirrors of our eyes that create a nerve impulse communication to the brain, etc., etc.) also requires an organ to detect those modulations, which must, itself, refract, modulate, and / or reflect light. So the big, *** BIG *** problem type thing you're gonna have is --- ....if you make an invisible man, he's gonna be *** BLIND *** !!!!" JP, Cortland, Bob Hall, Catfantastic and others understood all that, it just made my head dizzy. See if you can follow the logic.
Cstar sto... er... borrowed You Know You're a Callahanian When... from newcomer Robert (IMAGINES) , risked a tickling, and brought the list to Callahan's on Delphi, hoping for additions. Robert was very gracious about the thef... er.... borrowed items, and agreed to let Cstar off with only a warning, since Callahanians came to her rescue with additions to the list. Do you have one to add? Join in!

Poem of the Month - "The Last Hunt"

Deep in the aspen thicket,
dead leaves twist and fall,
stealth, hide and wait,
breath and soul abate.

Muted rustle of his footfall,
strides on amber leaves,
a drifts through dusky shadows,
a monarch in the glen.

Have him in my sights,
finger on the mark,
gentle pull, the day is mine,
with stories to be told.

He stopped and looked at me.
awesome beauty shown,
regal dignity with grace,
nobility dwells in this place.

Finger taken of the mark
sights lower with a sigh
deep in an aspen thicket
this one shall not die.

No stories to be told,
not even where he lives.
A lifetime of remembering,
a monarch in the glen

--Kay Lee Kelly 06/11/00

Closing Quote

"One day at a time - this is enough. Do not look back and grieve over the past, for it is gone: and do not be troubled about the future, for it has not yet come. Live in the present, and make it so beautiful that it will be worth remembering."

-- Ida Scott Taylor
