Newsletter of the Callahan's Saloon Custom Forum on Delphi

In this issue:

Welcome - Scavenger Hunt - New Sci-Fi Books
Delphi News - Pleas

Welcome!!!

Welcome to everyone who has dropped in to visit us since we opened. I know that service has been sporadic at times (Alright, it's been downright nonexistent), but I hope to improve things.

Most of you know that I am currently in the middle of a business trip to Seattle, WA. This has caused me some difficulty in gaining access to Delphi. On a few occasions I have had to make long distance calls to log on. But, from now on, I am planning my schedule better in order to maximize efficiency during my visits. This, along with some other improvements, should improve Callahan's Saloon, and turn it into the kind of place you would like to go.

Now, enough of my gibberish, let's move on to the news stories.

Scavenger Hunt:

It's time to enter the upcoming on-line scavenger hunt. I will be posting the Hunt list on October 1. You will receive a list of clues. These clues will lead you to other forums and SIG's. There you will find the trivia questions I have hidden. The first person to e-mail me with the correct answers wins 5 free hours.

If you are interested in playing, post a note in the forum or go to Custom Forum 6, choose the mail function, and send me an e-mail. Why not give it a try. It'll be fun.

New Science Fiction Books In September:

"Viravax" by Bill Ransom - Ace; 17.95

"Eternal Light" by Paul McAuley - Avona/William Morrow; 22.00

"Bardic Voices II: The Robin & the Kestrel" by Mercedes Lackey - Baen; 20.00

(Try her Serrated Edge novels. She deals soundly with the subject of child abuse.)

"Virtual Light" by William Gibson - Bantam; 21.95

(A new novel by the author of Neuromancer, the man who coined the phrases Cyberspace and Cyberpunk.)

"The Shining Ones: Book Two of the Tamuli" by David Eddings - Del Rey; 22.00

"Isle of Woman" by Piers Anthony - Tor; 23.95

Watch in the next issue for a new Book Review column.

Delphi News:

"We're pleased to announce an agreement in principle for The News Corporation Limited to acquire DELPHI. The announcement was made September 1,1993 by News Corporation Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Rupert Murdoch, during a speech broadcast via satellite to company locations in Los Angeles, New York, London, and Sydney, Australia.

"News Corporation is a multinational media company headquartered in Sydney. Some of News Corporation's well known businesses include Twentieth Century Fox, Fox Television, Harper Collins Publishing, TV Guide, Mirabella Magazine, Sky TV, Star TV, and large number of newspapers in Great Britain, the US, and Australia including the Boston Herald, the New York Post, and the Times of London.

"It's important to note, however, that in many ways it will be business as usual for DELPHI -- just on a larger scale. Delphi's management team will remain the same, we'll be operating out of the same facility in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and we'll remain committed to providing high-value innovative services with an emphasis on personal interaction. Maintaining the community feeling of DELPHI is important to us and it is important to News Corporation."

From a message from Rusty Williams in the Interactive Future forum.

Pleas:

Plea # 1;

Well, as you guys know, I'm just getting started. So far, response has been slow. But that's about to change. I'm going to advertise a little more aggressively, I have the Scavenger Hunt coming up, and next month I'll be announcing plans for the interactive Murder Mystery.

Now for my request. I pay Delphi for the privilege of running this forum. Then I get to spend my own paid time to maintain it. If I can get enough people interested in using it, I can get Delphi to waive the cost of running the forum. (I'll still have to pay for my time.) Whenever you guys sign on and need to send mail or use a workspace, if you'd do it from my forum, it would help me out. Thanks.

Plea # 2;

Next, tell your friends about us. Things are getting better here. Check the forum messages for some new topics of discussion and you'll see. While you're there, add a post of your own, even if it's just to say "Hi" to someone. Check the poll occasionally, and give us your opinion. Afterward, if you want to go into more depth with your answers, add a note in the forum.

Plea # 3;

Finally, I'm looking for volunteers who want to help with the games, contests, and newsletter. If you are interested in helping, e-mail me. (From within Custom Forum 6. <G>)

If you do not wish to continue receiving this newsletter, just drop me a line. If you like it, show it to a friend. I'd be happy to add them to my mailing list. Thanks for your support.

Nick (NGREENE)
